Editorial Reviews

Review

"The world-building in this book was very good. Spletzer obviously has not only a creative mind, but the ability to create intricate and interesting worlds."  - The Pen & Muse

"This book has a promising storyline that has the potential to sweep you off your feet and into the world of the Gatoans." --Night Owl Reviews

"Jewels is Ms. Spletzer's debut novel and she has a WINNER! She draws you into her story and holds your attention to the very last word." --ManicReaders.com

From the Author

There would be no Jewels if it hadn't been for a space opera novella anthology call and an old blog post where I experimented with the use of the first-person voice. I wanted a character that was strong, yet flawed and I wanted her to be able to find love and acceptance.

The space opera genre was easy to write because some of my favorite sci-fi shows/movies (Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate) are done in that style.

The pity of it is that the basic premise of this book wasn't too bad.

Here is a great example of a wonderful Sci-Fi story that engages the reader and keeps their interest.

I read this book in a couple of hours and was disappointed that I have to wait to read the next book.

The story of a young genetically-engineered telepath on a mission that would change her life and that of Earth was engaging from beginning to end. The story was well-written and flowed easily through a single plotline. I read the whole book in one sitting, unable to wait to see what would happen next!

The Jewels story, however, is more complex than it appears. The story hints at government conspiracies and genetic manipulation. It progresses from a yet-unwritten background of events that brought about the need for this mission. Multifaceted characters are well-developed with mysterious histories. I finished the book, wanting more.

The book is written for adults, but without the use of profanity. There is one tastefully done intimate scene. I find Kisha's approach refreshing.

I am looking forward to future books in the Jewels saga.

If you are looking for a read that combines a variety of issues and layers that will have you running through the pages, then JEWELS by Lakisha Spletzer is just the right kind of book for you. At a time when series like those created by Stephanie Mayer, J. K. Rowling and others are dominating the bookstores and now the movie theaters, this is one that I can see headed in that direction. When talent and skill are the requirements for success, then you won't be able to go wrong with this literary adventure.

A new insightful author has waded to the top of romantic scifi that has scenes begging you to hold on to your seats, waiting for the next big crisis to fall. Jewels is a telepath who is struggling to find her own identity, one which she would never have suspected. As a new feline/human race emerges as friends, Jewels will find herself wrapped up in saving her planet from possible destruction as another alien race plans to wipe out human and feline alike.

It is a fast read and complex in character treatment. This has all the possibilites of growing into an interesting series. Great first for new author.

I enjoyed this book until towards the end. The I just got flipping angry at the manipulation and lies the heroine had been put through. I, myself, would have liked her to at least give a few people massive headaches - like a three day blinding, vomituous migraine- after the crisis was over. I was blinded and vomituous by that part of the plot and it ruin the enjoyment of the book for me. However, I am willing to admit I was premenstual at the time and have PMDD - anger is a bit of a default mode at those times. But the whole story line depends on secrets kept from, lies told to, or manipulation done on our heroine. Now it's all perfectly logical and necessary for the plot development, so I can understand that "they" did it. But by the final few scenes, I needed a little payback and didn't get it. It was like sucking on a chocolate covered candy only to find the inside is licorice. Great if you like licorice, but otherwise leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

I discovered the Adopt an Indie website, and I thought I gave it a shot. I love science fiction, so I picked up this book. Attention: spoilers.

First, I must say I expected a science-fiction story. Telepaths, aliens, warriors, space war - what else it could be? Actually it is more. It is a paranormal romance science-fiction book. Yes, there are telepathy involved, but in a higher level than just "talking with your mind". Yes, there are aliens in the book, though it is funny that cat-like aliens fight with dog-like ones. And yes, there are space ships and war, though that part could last longer for my taste.

Being a man, I'm not expert in romance (didn't I say this earlier?), but as far as I can tell, the romance worked just fine. At the end, I believed that the human woman fell in love with the cat prince, and their love and desire became fulfilled.

I liked that the telepathy was taken to a higher level. Those characters possessing this ability, not only communicated with each other, but could apply bigger mental forces. I found the mental shielding mate role interesting.

I missed some more sci-fi, though. But I know it's just me, being science-fiction fan.

There is one thing I should mention: there were too much telling instead of showing. I would have appreciated more showing during action, it would make the book more dynamic and enjoyable.

I give three stars. This is just because I'm fan of pure sci-fi. If you like romance and paranormal stories more, you may give it better rating.

The pity of it is that the basic premise of this book wasn't too bad. Unfortunately, the plot and characters were shallow and disjointed and there were too many silly mistakes.
e.g. an officer (Jewels) would never call a sergeant Sir.
Would our world really have regressed to the point of resorting to flogging as a punishment after achieving a united planetary government?
I also can not see how any race with paws i.s.o. hands could ever advance technologically. The Aliens were just not believable.
I have been reading si-fi for close on 60 years and this is rubbish.
Don't waste your time!
