A highly educational piece and essential reading for scholars, students, and non-specialist general readers,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Jewish Bible: A JPS Guide (Paperback)
Judaism is a culture with a long history and a belief system that has endured millennia of oppression, evolution, and influence. "The Jewish Bible" is a complete and comprehensive guide to anyone who wants to learn about the Torah and the Talmud. With summaries of each of the Bible's individual books, a glossary of terms, important diagrams and maps, along with scholarly commentary from some of today's most influential Judaic scholars, "The Jewish Bible" is a highly educational piece and essential reading for scholars, students, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in Judaism. No personal, community, or academic library's Judaic Studies reference collections would be complete or comprehensive without the inclusion of The Jewish Publication Society's edition of "The Jewish Bible".

This excellent book is designed to increase your ability to appreciate a great work of world literature, the Hebrew Bible. It teaches how the Bible is structured, what the individual components mean on their own terms, and how it has been interpreted in traditional Jewish sources. Each chapter is written by scholar who is an expert in their field. The scholars write clearly and elegantly. The layout is visually appealing and easy to read. No matter how much or how little you know about the Hebrew Bible, you can learn more from this book.

It's as if it is written for someone taking a pop-quiz... I will say however it is much better than the JPS Guide entitled, "Dictionary of Jewish Words". If you're interested in going beyond the basics, this probably won't aid much... If you would like to see an open admission to people using/misusing the name of the heavenly Father, look up the origin of the words they use in place of Abba,(Father in the English). That's the reason you cannot mix idol worship with true religion, you forget who's who, sadly these people make the same mistake as King Solomon. May our Father have mercy on our brother Shem.
p.s. ommitting vows does not hide the fact that Yahweh, (what they claim is the "sacred" name YHWH), is a name of an idol, as is their other so-called general terms, i.e. El, Elohim, Adonia, etc., which are all borrowed names from the Canaanite gods,(the same ones in the Torah/bible they worshipped that caused Solomon to fall, amongst others) not at all what they were told but then again when you start writing your own traditions you become enslaved by them. Forget the fact that our Father tells them his name is Ehyeh, which means I am... instead they simply write down the meaning of the name and added their own titles later. No one can use the excuse that Abba,(meaning Father in the English) couldn't have been used in the place of the other so-called "scared" names because the Father instructs us NOT to use this name for anyone else other than him, so if any name should be considered "scared" it should be ABBA, but than again.... WHERE DOES IT SAY HIDE MY NAME, or alter it? They won't even write the word GOD correctly, instead they opt to write G-D. I guess they need to use the tetragrammaton so that they can reserve the use of the word Abba for the Priest and Rabbis. Sorry, these books just add sorrow vs. information that is useful to those studying the Father's word or religion in general. |
