I have used this book 3 times now and referenced it many more times. I think it was a bargain and would be at twice the price. the recipes are easy to understand and execute. The results were excellent and hubby and daughter asked only, "when are we having that again?"

too difficult,

I like to use the slow cooker/crock pot to make quick, easy meals. Most recipes I have for the crockpot use a lot of pork and non-kosher ingredients, so I thought it would be nice to have a kosher version.
So far, however, the recipes seem too complicated with too many ingredients/ spices. It is definitely written by a "gourmet" chef vs. a working mom/housewife who wants something easy and simple to make for the family I will try some of the recipes for when I have company/more time

Great addition to the Kosher Kitchen,
By ppdoc "ppdoc" (Baltimore, MD) - See all my reviews

I consider myself to be an accomplished cook and am always looking for unique additions to my cookbook shelves. I found this at a Jewish bookstore in Brooklyn and couldn't wait to get it home to give it a try. For anyone in a kosher home who is looking for Shabbos lunch recipes this will be a great addition to your kitchen. My daughter hates standard cholents and I have been looking for recipes that could cook overnight in a crockpot and be ready for Shabbos lunch. Everything I have made so far from this cookbook has been a hit. From the Belgian sweet and sour beef and onion stew to the garlicky pot roast to the Cassoulet everything has been either very good or great. For those of use who are Shabbos observant there will need to be some small adaptions which are typical and not too hard. I would highly suggest this cookbook for anyone looking for something different than the standard beans and barley cholent. Obviously this cookbook isn't limited to those of us who keep kosher or are Sabbath observant, it should be a welcome addition to anyone who uses a slow cooker.

Not as easy as I had hoped,

I had hoped that the recipes in this book would be easy---just throw stuff into the crock pot, and it will come out delicious in 12 hours. However, the recipes, although they sound glorious, are not that easy, at least to me a primitive cook. But as far as wonderful recipes that can be made kosher, this book is excellent.

FINALLY a slow cooker book with something truly wonderful and different to offer! I will agree these recipes are not for the faint of heart looking to dump ingredients in the pot before work and then leave. Most of the recipes have many steps before getting to the slow cooker. I will also warn that unless you live in a major metropolis with unlimited culinary resources, you will have to do some online ordering of ingredients, mostly spices.
But oh...is it worth it! Flavors that will rival the most expensive restaurant in town! Although the recipes are time intensive, she lets you know what steps can be done in advance, and many things can be frozen in small batches for future uses and stored for months. Try the Moroccan-spiced duck with sweet-tart orange sauce and forbidden rice...you will be a superstar! This book is NOT just for Jews, but if you ARE Jewish, you will appreciate the history of some of the more classic recipes and how they morphed with the different cultures. Although I feel this book is geared toward the accomplished cook, I don't think it's beyond the scope of a beginner with a little patience.

I was excited about ordering this, but when it came and I looked it over, I decided to save it for when I "have" to give a gift. I wanted a slow-cooker book because at 64, divorced and working, I no longer have time or interest in cooking. I wanted a book with tasty one-pot meals I could make in the morning when I've got energy, eat at night when I'm tired, and freeze left-overs for another time. These gourmet recipes are probably delicious. But they require a lot of preparation and use all kinds of fancy, expensive, or hard-to-find ingredients, like two cups of wine (what will I do with the rest, as I rarely imbibe?), vanilla bean (with extract listed as a second-rate alternative), mascarpone cheese (I've never seen it Kosher and she doesn't offer a substitution) or things I'd have to order by mail. NOT easy at all, not convenient. A better subtitle would have been, "Prepare-ahead gourmet fare."

Needs Photos,

I am very visual. I ordered this book for a few reasons...Jewish slow cook recipes, I collect and use cookbooks, and the photo on the front cover. I have found some potential meals to prepare for our Shabbath dining. This book has appetizers, soups, entrées, side dishes and desserts, yum. BUT sight is a vital part of the dining experience without pictures something gets lost in the translation. I am looking forward to using the book but a few photos would have been a good feature to have been included.

Finally a slow cooker recipe book that helps to produce gourmet meals. I've tried two recipes so far. The lamb tagine was beautiful and actually tasted better on the second and third days, chicken and rice had a unique flavour and I loved being able to "slow cook" a rice dish. Yes, it takes some effort to assemble it all together but is well worth it. Slow cooking is my prefered method now as I'm a working mum with two young children. I only wish there were some pictures in the book for more inspiration. Overall a great buy.

This is a wonderful cookbook for people who want to be able to have hot meals without babysitting the food. There is a lot of preparation needed, and the recipes call for ingredients that many cooks do not have on hand. One item, many of the recipes call for at least a 6.5 quart crock pot which is larger than many people have in their house.
