A century ago, the earliest Jewish museums sought a place in the burgeoning world of museums. They aimed to make Jewish history and heritage readily accessible to Jews and non-Jews alike, thereby promoting a greater understanding of how the traditions and culture of one people contribute to the greater worldwide community. This large-format book, with approximately 350 color illustrations, is the first to present an inclusive history of the world's Jewish museums, featuring their prize collections, whose scope spans ceremonial objects to fine arts to historical artifacts. Far from a guidebook or a museum catalog, this sumptuously illustrated volume, with an engaging and authoritative text by noted Judaic scholar Dr. Grace Cohen Grossman, takes us to Central and Eastern Europe, where the memory of the Holocaust is especially immediate and Jewish museums are creating their exhibitions and programs in places where there are few remnants of the once-thriving communities; then to Western Europe and the Mediterranean Rim, where Jewish museums evidence Jewish interaction within each region through language, the arts, and everyday events. From there the text crosses to the United States and the museums whose vibrant collections reflect the energy of those who traveled so far from home; then to Israel, the cradle of Judaism and whose museums reflect the ingathering of Jews from many lands. Finally we are in the far corners of the globe--Asia, Australia, South Africa, Central and South America--not the places that first come to mind when referring to Jewish settlements, but where collections may indeed be ancient and established, or new and emerging.
A lengthy directory of Jewish museums around the world is a useful supplement to the text. Divided by region, and following the book's organization, the directory includes all the pertinent information for contacting each museum, followed by a brief description of the museum's mission and collections. Historical structures such as the Baroque synagogue in Tykocin, Poland, built in 1642, offer one kind of museum experience; the Jewish Museum Berlin, opened in 2001 in the avant-garde building designed by Daniel Libeskind, offers another; the recent discoveries in the medieval Jewish sector of Girona, Spain--which time and circumstance have preserved so magnificently--offer yet one more. Wandering through the pages of Jewish Museums of the World is almost like being there, and the information contained within this glorious celebratory volume will inform the traveler, educate the reader, and delight the viewer.

Great Bar or Bat Mitzvah gift,

This review is from: Jewish Museums of the World: Masterpieces of Judaica (Hardcover)
I have been giving this book as a Bar and Bat Mitzvah gift for a few years now and just received this thank you note from 12 year old Chava Rena: "I'm taking art classes now and can really appreciate how complicated and intricate the art in this book is. The art inspires my art work and the Judaic aspect inspires me spiritually as a Jew." I couldn't have received a nicer thank you note!! I have also given this book to High School grads who are spending a year of study in Israel and sometimes stop in Europe on the way home. Although this book is too heavy to carry around while traveling, one student told me that he had taken notes and would visit some of the museums.
