Editorial Reviews

Review

"Hollace Weiner's talents as a writer and reporter shine through in these profiles of unforgettable Texans. Too bad most of these rabbis lived in an era before prime time. The Beaumont rabbi who answered an ad for a 'mixer' would make a fine documentary. The Dallas rabbi with the stirring radio voice could have been a Nightline authority airing his views on the Religious Right. The lay-rabbi who blessed the shrimp fleet would win the hearts of any audience." -- Connie Chung, ABC/TV News Anchor, bookjacket review

"I never fully understood, or appreciated, my heritage or my Texas roots until I read Hollace Weiner's marvelous book. It's terrific, and, as I learned from Weiner, so were most of my ancestors!" -- Bob Strauss, former Chairman National Democratic Party, former Ambassador to Russia, and great-grandson of the rabbi on the cover of Jewish Stars in Texas

"The topic is as vast as Texas itself and resonates with the state's frontier character. But the message is universal: We must teach the pioneering spirit of Judaism so that it can be understood everywhere and so that its vibrancy can enrich every community." -- Jerry Ceppos, Vice President/News, Knight-Ridder, bookjacket review

5.0 out of 5 stars I Didn't Want to Stop, November 28, 1999

This review is from: Jewish Stars in Texas : Rabbis and Their Work (Hardcover)
Hollace Weiner's writing kept me enthralled. This book is the rare combination of careful and accurate research while the presentation is that of an enticing historical novel. It's loaded with all the goods - mystery, politics, romance and more, but all the accounts are true. I couldn't put this book down as every chapter had a fresh and intriguing draw. The facts themselves are fascinating. Written in Ms. Weiner's engaging style, this book is a big winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Texas Rabbis Shine, November 24, 1999
This review is from: Jewish Stars in Texas : Rabbis and Their Work (Hardcover)
Ms. Weiner's book about the impact of Rabbi's on Texas Culture and Goverment is an invaluable tool for the historian and genealogist. It also happens to be a wonderful read! I finished it in one setting and was immediately able to place some of my own historical research into Ms. Weiner's Texas-sized swath of Jewish influence. I highly recommend the book.
