Book Description

November 1, 1993
"The beginning of wisdom is to desire it."
SOLOMON IBN GABIROL
"Where there is no vision, the people perish."
PROVERBS
Those who desire wisdom can hardly do better than to start with this book. Through nearly four thousand years of history, the Jewish people have learned a thing or two, and have extracted from their experiences, both good and bad, a rich essence that speaks to every time and every heart. JEWISH WISDOM gathers more than a thousand proverbs, wise sayings, common-sense observations, and memorable quotations that instruct, inspire, and guide the reader to the good in life. It is a powerful antidote to self-deception, confusion, worry, and fear.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

My grandma would love it if I would become fluent in Yiddish, but that's not going to happen any time soon. Instead of fielding questions regarding my marital status, now I can distract my grandma and great aunts with proverbs and anecdotes I picked up from reading Jewish Wisdom. It's definitely a must read before any holiday gathering. Not only will it serve to protect your privacy but it will also impress your grandma which is always a good thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is not wisdom to be always wise, November 10, 2004
This review is from: Jewish Wisdom (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a book of Jewish Wisdom in which a large number of entries alphabetically arranged are each provided with a small number of sayings. The attributions are very general (i.e. instead of a particular Tractate and page, a number of sayings are simply attributed as ' Talmud') .In other words this is a general work for the general reader who does not have Jewish knowledge. This does not mean of course that it does not have many memorable sayings which it does. The authors in their introduction say "These proverbs and wise sayings seek to help us improve our character, deepen our understanding of life, and expand our wisdom so that we become better people, enjoy life more, and make this world a happier, more just place" Let us hope that the readers feel a small part of the author- editors goals are achieved.
" Man was not brought into the world to enjoy himself" Abraham ibn Ezra
" He who raises a child is called father, not only the man who gave it birth . "Exodus Rabbah"
"Happiness is found in a happy heart " Persian Jewish saying
"Who is wise? He who learns from all men" Pirke Avot
