5.0 out of 5 stars I will NEVER use a relaxer again!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Complicated procedure; be sure to use fresh product.
After reading about "japanese hair straightening" and thermal reconditioning for quite some time, I was anxious to try a do-it-yourself approach. I was not willing to pay hundreds of dollars for a salon experience so I opted to try this kit, which can also be found at your local beauty supply store. 5.0 out of 5 stars I will NEVER use a relaxer again!!!!, June 29, 2011

This is the best product ever! Well.....I don't know about "EVER" but, you know what I mean. I am a african american woman and I stopped relaxing my hair about a year ago because I was totally tired of the breakage and the unnatural flat look it gave me. I needed something because my hair was getting out of control and I decided to try this after seeing similar product on youtube. This is so much better than a relaxer!!! My hair is way softer, shiny and tangle free! It almost looks as if the actual texture of my hair has changed and its very light and bouncy. lol. I love it! And I don't believe for a second that it will last 8 months but I shall see. Also.....Its never burned! At ALL! Well, except when I repeatedly burned myself with the flat iron. :-) But that was totally my fault. Anywho, this is an amazing product....I love it! OH! and I didn't even use the shampoo and conditioner provided. I washed my hair the night before with Carol's Daughter Shampoo and braided it until the next morning. And it still worked great!

Pro's: About $500 cheaper than going to the salon
Easy to follow instructions
My hair looks amazing

Con's: IT SMELLS AWFUL!!!
You need at least 4 hours to complete
Box says it has 2 applications, no! definitely only one use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Complicated procedure; be sure to use fresh product., January 3, 2011
This review is from: One'N Only From Jheri Redding Thermal Ionic Permanent Straightener NORMAL (Health and Beauty)
After reading about "japanese hair straightening" and thermal reconditioning for quite some time, I was anxious to try a do-it-yourself approach. I was not willing to pay hundreds of dollars for a salon experience so I opted to try this kit, which can also be found at your local beauty supply store. The box that I received was sun-faded and dusty on top; I could tell that this box had been sitting around on the shelf for a while. However, there was no expiration date on the package, so I proceeded to try this kit with the help of a friend. BE SURE to have a friend assist you; there is no way I would recommend trying this by yourself. It took about 6 hours from start to finish. (Note: you will need a tinting brush to apply this kit.)

My friend and I followed the instructions as closely as possible. (It is helpful to go to this company's website to view very helpful videos of the strand test.) The first step, the relaxer, was supposed to take 5-30 minutes to complete. However, my friend did strand test after strand test and the hair just would not process. I sat with the relaxer on my hair for two hours, and my hair never did fully process. This was probably because the product was old, as I suspected. (This is a very smelly process, just so you know! You will also want to wear gloves even though the box, oddly, does not include any.) However we proceeded anyway and continued to follow the instructions carefully. It was difficult to observe the final result, because we did a second flat ironing session after I rinsed out the neutralizer. I could not tell how the texture of my hair had really been changed until I waited 48 hours to wash and restyle my hair.

The final result was that this kit straightened my naturally wavy, thick, and somewhat "fluffy" hair a little bit. It smoothed out many of the waves, and made certain sections, particularly the ends straighter. However because I used a product that was most likely past its prime, my hair was definitely not pin straight and to get the results I want I still need to blowdry my hair and use a flat iron. I recommend giving this product a try if you're looking for an affordable thermal relaxing option, but make sure you get a fresh product, and follow the instructions carefully.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ionic Straightening.. Not too great., August 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: One'N Only From Jheri Redding Thermal Ionic Permanent Straightener NORMAL (Health and Beauty)
I used the ionic straightener a few months ago and the results have already faded and my hair is back to its normal, curly state. I used it again on my bangs this morning and I think doing it on smaller sections of hair makes it work better. I'm pretty sure you can use it more than once. I had a lot left over after my first try. I plan on using it until I run out.
I guess it was worth buying since it was only $20, and I saved around $300.
