Book Description

October 3, 2006 1403971927 978-1403971920 annotated edition
The book explores the global jihad movement and its emergence in the latter half of the twentieth century. The book investigates the nature and extent of this threat; traces its religious and ideological roots; relevant history; the goals of the movement; who is fighting jihad; how they end up in the movement; how it is being funded and sponsored; and what nations, particularly the United States, one of the movement's primary targets, are doing to counter the threat.  The book, intended for the general public, assumes that the reader has only a minimal background of this compelling contemporary topic. While the authors tried to avoid using academic jargon, they have tried to source the book so that it could be used in political science, international relations, and defense and security studies courses.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Jalil Roshandel and Sharon Chadha have written the definitive account of Jihadism.  With clarity, breadth, and depth, they delve into the men, money, and ideas which support this lethal phenomenon in the Middle East and around the world.  Jihad and International Security should be a must-read for policymakers, journalists, and anyone wanting to understand the roots, ideology, and tactics of what is today perhaps the West's greatest challenge."
--Michael Rubin, Editor, Middle East Quarterly

"The authors of this welcome volume ask the hard questions about the ideology motivating global jihadists; they also provide some balanced and sensible policy  recommendations. Both for its overview and its practicality, this book will stand apart from others. It deserves a wide readership, not just in government circles, but  for all those concerned to understand how the war on terror is to be fought and won."
--Bruce Lawrence, Professor of Islamic Studies, Director, Duke Islamic Studies Center, Duke University

"In a spare and focused analysis, Roshandel and Chadha explain the where-what-how-and-who of jihad, the concept that inspires Islamist violence. They convincingly trace its intellectual origins and survey its current manifestations, and conclude with smart insights for countering this worldwide scourge."
--Daniel Pipes, Director, Middle East Forum

"Roshandel and Chadha have written a tough, hard nosed primer on al Qaeda and the global jihad movement.  They provide a basic introduction to the network's history, actions, tactics, organization, and financing, as well as the methods that have been used to fight it.  They also review al Qaeda's statements, ideology, philosophy, and interpretation of Islam."
--Steven Spiegel, Professor of Political Science, Director, Middle East Regional Security Program, Burkle Center for International Relations, University of California, Los Angeles

This review is from: Jihad and International Security (Paperback)
Recently, Islam intruded itself upon our world in ways that is too often really upsetting and unsettling to our way of life. However, both peaceful Muslims and violent Islamists are here to stay now, and I wanted to get an understanding of this paradox between the apparently peaceful and the other, violet Islam. The book says it exactly, and is right on. This leaves you with a satisfied feeling; you can easily follow and understand what is happening. It is a pleasure to follow this factual, well documented presentation of the evil use of Jihad inside Islam, and I appreciate the authors' clear thinking on this matter. This is what I wanted.
