The book starts at the very beginning, with descriptions of different needles and yarn, a list of things you should carry in your knitting bag, through knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, and all the usual suspects right through cables and color stranding.

Along the way, there are some handy tips, and good, basic information. It's not the most thorough book I've seen. Instructions tend to be a decent illustration and a sentence or so of explanation. They're good explanations, but I can't really say how effective they are to explain a brand-new technique to someone who's never tried it before. (It's often the hardest part of reviewing basic knitting books, since I already know the basics, it's hard to mentally go back to when I didn't.)

In addition to the basic knitting instruction, there are patterns along the way, carefully matched to the skill level along the way. The very first project is a garter stitch puppet, then there are sweaters, hats, wraps, until we end with a lacy tank top.

All in all, Jil Eaton has put her experience from Knit Simple`s "Ask Jil" column to good use. She already knows the questions people are likely to ask and tries to answer them for you.

I've been knitting for a long time and this book has provided me with really useful tips on how I can do things better! It also has taught me a number of new tips and techniques I had never tried. The book is really well organized for beginners as well as experienced knitters. There are plenty of great ideas embedded in the lessons and the projects and colors are inspiring enough so that I want to try several new things. I'm so glad I have this resource in my knitting book collection.

Jil Eaton's Knitting School: The Complete Guide to Becoming a Confident Knitter is a step-by-step approach to learning to knit. The first section talks about materials and supplies you will need. Then the actual knitting starts, the book has 19 different lessons and a project to go along with the lesson. If the technique is something you are not interested in it is quite easy to skip that one and move on to the next, but naturally some of them build on one another and can't be skipped. The pictures and illustrations are clear and well thought out. I would recommend this book only if you do not already have a beginning technique book, there is not a lot of new information here. In the case of those who have tried knitting with some of the other books available I'd suggest if you have a library nearby with a copy, check it out first before deciding to add it to your collection.

This is the best -- having both basic patterns and easy-to-understand instructions of the stitches and procedures used in each pattern. I would recommend it.
