Book Description

April 2003
Jill Gordon, best known for her vivid portrayals of nature through her tapestry designs, now recreates her observations in cross stitch.

Fourteen stunning new designs reflect Jill's unique interpretations of the natural world, encompassing animals, landscapes, gardens, fruit and flowers. With the whole fabric worked, the images produced are as full and vibrant as nature itself. Striking zebras quench their thirst at a shimmering savannah watering hole, and brightly coloured macaws inhabit the tropical beauty of a rainforest. Watchful owls are illuminated by moonlight, while a lizard lazes the day away in a succulent cactus garden of exotic aloes and yucca. Cows are found grazing beneath the blossoms of a summer orchard, and topiary hedges and trees adorn a formal garden. Jill's own watercolour sketches, from which she has taken the designs, offer extra inspiration.

While many scenes are finished as simple framed pictures, Jill shows how easily the stitching can be transformed into eye-catching and unusual items to adorn the home. A wall hanging, footstool and box lid insert are just a few of the exciting ideas featured. Step-by-step instructions accompany every project, while the comprehensive techniques section includes hints and tips for successful stitching. However the finished work is displayed, these designs are guaranteed to bring the beauty of the outside world into any home.

Jill Gordon started stitching and painting in 1971, producing her nature inspired art as beautifully in textiles as she does in watercolour. While designing kits for the John Lewis Partnership, she also produces her own needlepoint kits under her own name. Jill lives in Waterhouses, Staffordshire.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Textile artist Gordon is well known as a designer of projects for several British needlework magazines. In this first book on cross-stitch, her experience as a needlepoint designer is evident. Her cross-stitch pictures of animals and natural scenes are beautifully designed in tapestry style with no reliance on backstitching outlining. A peacock footstool cover is particularly stunning. Charts are in full color, with symbols keyed to Anchor cotton floss. Public libraries will welcome this addition to their collections for experienced stitchers.

This review is from: Jill Gordon's Cross Stitch Pictures (Paperback)
I saw Jill Gordon's Peacock on a website that carried her charts in the UK. The chart alone was going to cost [money] including shipping. So, when a friend pointed out this book, I nearly flipped. The price was less than half the cost of a single chart, and the book is filled with a dozen other designs as well! When I received it, I discovered that it had much more content than your typical book of cross stitch charts. Jill has included commentary on her inspiration, art techniches and other interesting stories on each design, making them come alive in a way few "charts" do. For example she includes a story about peacocks in her native England sitting on top of the barn squawking at passers-by. And, did you know that the more eyes on a peacocks tail, the more alluring he is to females, but the more cumbersome his tail is, making him more vulnerable to preditors?

For many of the charts there is a picture of the original watercolor, suggestions on the best way to stitch it to achieve the desired look, and other ideas for finishing. Finally, she even has a section in the back for the finishing techniques she used in the pictures. Considering that this book costs what many single charts do today, this would definately rank as one of the best values I have added to my stash. You will not be disappointed!
