Editorial Reviews

Review

“Once practically an afterthought in jewelry, beaded ropes are at the heart of Jill Wiseman's beautiful book. By looping a rope, wrapping it around itself, or tying it into a knot, Jill creates stunning jewelry that you would never think could come from a simple rope. A variety of projects made with each technique clearly demonstrates how to create completely different looks by changing a few variables. After reading this book, you'll never look at a beaded rope the same way.” --Bead&Button
“What I love most in Jill Wiseman's work is the plain elegance of her jewelry--clear structures and a passion for the little details that make a piece so special and timeless. This book shows a multitude of techniques to create the classiest ropes, embellish them, and transform them into dimensional pieces. This is not only a collection of beautiful jewelry but also a brilliant overview of all the techniques. This book should definitely be on every beader’s bookshelf.” --Sabine Lippert

“Finally! A beadwork book that shows beaders how to stitch gorgeous ropes, strands, and bands! Jill's stellar stitching instructions and covetous color combinations will have every beader that reads this book feeling like they have just enjoyed a full-on class with Jill. Her book gives beaders excellent advice and includes a gallery section that will have you inspired and scrambling for the beading tray.” --Maggie Roschyk

“Jill's new book is a unique study in the infinite possibilities, variations, and applications of beaded ropes. Beautifully illustrated and clearly narrated step-by-step instructions guide the reader through the 24 projects. Topped off with an inspiring gallery of rope-based jewelry, this book is a must-have for every beader.” - Laura McCabe

"In Jill Wiseman’s Beautiful Beaded Ropes, we are treated to a wide variety of stitches resulting in a selection of ropes, many of which stand alone and others which provide the perfect complement to our own choice of beads. Jill shows us how to use the rope stitches in unexpected ways, making traditional ropes but also using them in earrings, rings, and focal pendants." - Marcia DeCoster

“If you tend to think of ropes as items that go around your neck and, perhaps, your wrist, Jill will surprise you. After seeing the enchanting Bohemian Earrings and the mesmerizing Ziggurat Ring--which has found its way to the top of my absolutely-must-bead bucket list--you will open to new and exciting possibilities in your own beadwork. What I may love most about this book is it has jewelry for real women, not for runway models or high society gals. You don't need to find an excuse to wear these pieces; they will not languish in your jewelry box after you've had the fun of beading them. Promise!” --Carol Dean Sharpe

“If you love the intricacies of working with seed beads and weaving them into beautiful and wearable jewelry pieces, then you will love this book. What Jill Wiseman has been able to do with this book is to take standard beadweaving stitches and enhance them with fabulous bead combinations and elegant components. Total beginners will have to take the time to practice the stitches, but jewelry makers who already have some beadweaving experience will be able to jump into many of these projects. Seed beading projects take a lot of time to make, but that is the nature of the medium. With these projects, the time is well spent. They are really all just gorgeous. I seriously cannot see one piece that I would not love to wear.” --About.com Jewelry Making

"...presented in full color with tons of photographs, a strong treasure trove of information for any jewelry do it yourself-er.” --Midwest Book Review

About the Author

Jill Wiseman lives in Pflugerville, Texas. She has taught at the Bead&Button Show, Bead Fest, and at bead stores and bead societies across the United States. She also teaches video classes on Beaducation.com. Jill has a very active and popular social media presence on Facebook (facebook.com/jill.wiseman) and blogs humorously and enthusiastically about her beading life on tapestrybeads.blogspot.com. More About the Author

Jill Wiseman lived a traditional, "8-to-5" corporate existence until a chance encounter with beads in 2001 changed everything. Her black and white world suddenly became full of color and texture, and sparkle and shine, and things would never be the same. Before long, Jill couldn't contain her beady joy another moment and had to share the world of beadweaving with others. She became a full-time beadweaving jewelry designer and teacher in 2004, and has had the pleasure of teaching at national bead shows like Bead&Button and Bead Fest ever since, as well as traveling to bead stores and bead societies for classes full of laughter and bead learning. Jill makes her home in Austin, Texas, with her mother, as well as two dogs and two cats who only occasionally eat the beads.

I pre-ordered this book about six months ago, and have been eagerly awaiting its arrival ever since. It far exceeded my expectations! Jill's designs are just stunning, and this is a book that you will definitely want to add to your beading library!

The focus of the book, as you can tell from its title, is on beaded ropes. Lest you're worried (as I was) that it would only contain necklace projects, I hope you'll be happy to note that it contains several bracelet and earring projects -- and even a stunning ring called Ziggurat Ring.

It is organized as follows:

* Chapter 1: Supplies and Techniques
* Chapter 2: Spiral Ropes
* Chapter 3: Peyote Ropes
* Chapter 4: Netted Ropes
* Chapter 5: Herringbone Ropes
* Chapter 6: RAW Ropes
* Chapter 7: Other Stitches
* Gallery

If you flip through the "Look Inside" feature of the book, you'll notice how lovely all the projects are. I always know that I'm going to love a new beading book when I flip through it and immediately want to start making everything in it -- which was also the case here. In addition to the projects, the Gallery section contains lovely, inspiring eye candy not only by Jill, but also by the likes of Melissa Grakowsky Shippee, Melanie Potter, Nancy Cain, and others.

As with the other books in the Lark Master Series, the instructions are precise, the diagrams are excellent, and the supply lists are clear. I also love how these books are hardback, since they are so much easier to bead from.

On a personal note, if you've ever taken a class with Jill or are friends with her on Facebook, you'll know that she is one of the sweetest and funniest people around -- and a bead artist who truly lives and breathes beads.

Don't let the phrase "master class" scare you off. This isn't a class for master beadweavers; it is a class by a master beadweaver. If you are a beginning beadweaver, Jill provides you with excellent instructions for the basic tubular stitches - peyote, herringbone, right angle weave, and netting. She then helps you build the skills needed not only to bead some of the more basic ropes in this book but also to feel comfortable to move on to the more complex pieces. Once you have finished the book, I don't doubt that you will find yourself adapting what you've learned to your own designs. The 24 projects in this volume, while each wonderful in their own right, provide you with a strong foundation from which to continue your development as a beader, perhaps even as a designer.

One of the benefits of attending a class taught by a master is that she has many - and shares some of her - little secrets, secrets that don't often find their way into instructions for individually published designs in magazines or kits. Throughout Beautiful Beaded Ropes, you will come upon items from Jill's own treasure chest of beading wisdom, some in call-out boxes, others hidden as little gems within the instructions themselves, each priceless. They range from advice on how to hold a spiral rope to avoid getting thread caught in the winding beads to the secret for how to keep the bubbles in the Bubbles and Bumps necklace from collapsing. You will experience more than one "why didn't I think of that?!" moment during your time in this class.

More advanced beaders will appreciate some of the twists and turns Jill takes with traditional techniques.

Speechless. So beautiful!!
From cover to cover, it's as if Jill is sitting beside me teaching me privately. Her unique voice and design sense is palpable throughout this book. The projects are amazing and as you read them, you will be amazed at how Jill takes the humble rope to the next level with embellishments and personal touches that are surprising and make you wonder why you didn't think of it yourself. This book is for everyone! For the beginner, Jill is very thorough in her basic information and does not throw you into the deep end. The simplicity of design, excellent illustrations and well written instructions are just a starting point for Jill's projects. She encourages the reader/beader to ask, "What if I do this? Change that?" I've already started on the first project and plan to make every project in this masterful book, even if it takes a lifetime.

Figuring out what rope to use to suit a pendant is a task that always frustrates me - I want to do something interesting, but often I just don't know what to do. Problem solved!

This book is going to LIVE on my beading table - and every time I wonder what sort of rope to make, I will look at it. Frankly, I'm just going to hold the pendant right up to the pictures in the book until I find a rope that suits.

The ropes are fabulous and fun, the photos are big and beautiful, and the instructions are clear with wonderful diagrams. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone who makes beaded necklaces - especially people like me whose mind moves more in the direction of pendants than ropes. Thank you!
