From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9-This biography covers the one-handed baseball pitcher's life from his birth in 1967 through his career highlights up until 1993. Macht is often as chatty as a fan magazine reporter as he discusses Abbott's high-school social life; his favorite hamburger stand; and even what he puts on his french fries. He shows the sensitive yet tough man to be an American hero who has had his disappointments and risen above them. A multitude of black-and-white photos appear throughout the text. Bill Gutman's Jim Abbott (Millbrook, 1992) and Rick Johnson's Jim Abbott (Dillon, 1991), which are both written for younger readers, have full-color but fewer photos. Librarians wanting more details on Abbott's career will want to add Macht's book to their collections.
