5.0 out of 5 stars Best pick for old guys, January 30, 2009

Been using these for about 10 years - electric and acoustic. If you are getting a little arthritic like me, you can hold on to these. The indention really lets you hang on through anything. Best part, the tone is great, really rings out.

I use this pick exclusively. The thumb indention and the tapered point are just right.

5.0 out of 5 stars CAUTION!! These picks can cause pregnancy!, January 27, 2011

I ordered a few of all the sizes, and really like them all. I prefer the thicker for the better grip when Im playing chords, or the thinner for leads and getting food out of my teeth, but if I had to settle on only one, Id go for the 1.0mm. It takes maybe 4 or 5 minutes to get used to the feel, but I noticed a big improvement on my speed and clarity of the faster notes instantly. I cant say for sure, but I suspect these picks gave me the added confidence in my playing which helped to impress the ladies, and therefore increased my chances of procreation.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good . . ., June 8, 2009
This review is from: Jim Dunlop 475P10 Dunl Plys Pk Big Stubby 1.O (Electronics)
The feel of pick is very much an individual preference, and there's no substitute for just playing with a particular plectrum, and seeing how it feels to you. A written review can't compare to actually playing, so take this for what it is worth.

For playing electric I like a pick that is flexible with some give. Dunlop's 0.6mm nylon picks are what I prefer. Looking for something new, I decided to try the 0.1m Big Stubby, the thinnest one available. The Big Stubby has a pretty good feel, the depressed area for the fingers does help to maintain grip, and beveled edge helps reduce drag on the strings. Although the Big Stubby is a very good pick, I still like the feel of the Dunlop nylons better. The stiffness of the Stubby makes playing a little less comfortable.

The design is cool looking, and I can see why it would feel great to many players. The Stubby would probably be my choice for playing acoustic or classical guitar. They are available in various thicknesses, so you might give them a try if you prefer a stiff pick.

I purchased these picks for my son to use on his acoustic guitar. He kept breaking the lighter picks he had and wanted to try something that was a little more heavy duty. They seem to work well for him. He goes back and forth between these and some lighter picks, but he does use them frequently.

5.0 out of 5 stars uniquely comfortable teardrop shape, January 1, 2012

First, note that despite the product photo, these 1.0mm Dunlop Big Stubby picks are a transparent candyapple red color - nice!

These are a tiny bit shorter and fatter than, for example, Dunlop Tortex standard teardrop picks. And they're made of hard polycarbonate plastic and polished glassy-smooth. This makes them glide across the strings quickly and smoothly with almost no resistance. I actually prefer the sound, feel, and control when picks have a bit of friction or 'drag', so this is the only thing I'm not crazy about, but a lot of players prefer this fast & slick feel. The round circular thumb indentations really do help with grip but I think they would provide better grip if they were polished like the rest of the pick, rather than textured. But still, I find this pick has a surprisingly comfortable and practical 3-dimensional shape that is easy to get used to and easy to grip.

Another neat feature: the edge profile is beveled/tapered at a sharp angle...a bit like a knife edge. Maybe this is why these are easier for strumming up-strokes than any other pick I've yet tried. Most picks have a tendency to dig-in or get caught a bit during up-strokes, but these minimize that tendency. 1.0mm is the thinnest gauge that teardrop Big Stubbys come in and it's a lot more flexible than other 1.0mm picks I've tried. For me it's the perfect balance of stiffness(control) vs. flexibility for all-round useage (both strumming and single-note picking). But if you do mostly single-note picking, you can get Big Stubbys in much thicker gauges with no flex whatsoever if that's what you like.

I've always used fender mediums but have been playing more acoustic and find the picks make quite a difference in you over all sound and how you play. I've tried many and really love theses.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dunlop 475 Big Stubby Guitar Picks, 1.0MM 6-Pack, July 16, 2010

This review is from: Jim Dunlop 475P10 Dunl Plys Pk Big Stubby 1.O (Electronics)
The Dunlop 475 Big Stubby Guitar Picks, 1.0MM 6-Pack has beveled edges that are excellent for pinch harmonics, pick tapping and sweep picking. If you are a grip and rip, thrash metal, rhythm player or smooth jazzy kinda player. I can't see where these picks would not fit in your playing style. Dunlop sells these in different thickness if you prefer the thinner sizes. The 1.00mm size are red in color nice for when you drop your pick. You can see it on the floor. The only thing knit-picking observation is they are 4.80 for a 6 pack, that is .80 cent for 1 pick. Losing one these suckers might set you back as much as a meal deal at your favorite fast food places that we struggling musician are force to eat at! I like them, I would love them if they were cheaper!
