Product Description

The original artifact is enshrined at the Experience Music Project, Seattle's hallowed rock and roll museum. A chipped, off-white, "cheese wedge" pedal with barely visible hand stenciled lettering, Hendrix's original octave divider doesn't look like much. But this is the magic box that produced the unforgettable fuzzed-out octave tones heard on Hendrix anthems such as "Purple Haze" and "Fire." A team of Dunlop engineers made a pilgrimage to Seattle to dissect and document Jimi's original Octavio-the holy grail of octave tone. The result? The Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Octavio is an exact clone of the amazing "octave up" pedal that Jimi used to make rock history. It's all here: every knob and jack, a DPDT on/off switch, and the exact same circuit layout faithfully copied from the original "breadboard," front-panel controls which let you dial in just the right amount of fuzz and adjust overall level. Own a little piece of Jimi-the Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Octavio.

Old is not always better November 5, 2010

got this pedal based on demos I saw on youtube, they are misleading.
the pedal itself has a very light octave effect and the fuzz is weak unless pushed by another fuzz or into a seriously loud amp.Hendrix did use insane volume and pushed this pedal with another, basically by itself it is weak and flabby.the other thing that bugged me about it was that it is battery powered only, no 9v adapter port. if you want a good octave up effect i suggest theElectro-Harmonix Micro POG Polyphonic Octave Generator and for a great fuzz take your pick (Way Huge Electronics WHE401 Swollen Pickle mkII Jumbo Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal is my choice), there are plenty of good ones, you will get a thicker sound and greater fidelity, even if you're going for the hendrix sound, unless you plan on recreating his rig.

Does not do Hendrix September 19, 2011

This pedal does not sound like Hendrix, despite the claims that it is the same circuit as he used. Something is different. For example, I am an accomplished guitarist and was doing a Hendrix tribute night. I use a strat with tube amps etc. I bought the pedal to be able to reproduce the guitar sound on Red House. If you listen to the solo in that song, you will hear an octave up, but it is subtle and not too distorted, certainly not fuzz-like. This pedal only gives you the octave with the fuzz, and lots of it. You might be able to pull off Purple Haze, but not the more subtle sounds that Hendrix got. I sent it back.

This pedal is a good excuse to address how to actually get Jimi's guitar sound. The main thing you need is a single-channel amplifier and a LOT of volume. The effects should have a lower setting at this volume, or else it will just sound muddy. This pedal will get you a part of Jimi's sound, but without the insane volume and gain coming from the master being up super-loud, it really won't sound right. Remember to back off the amount of the effect with the increase in volume, and it should sound pretty close... besides the playing ability of course!
