Henson's Drawings, But Not His Words., April 2, 2009
This review is from: Jim Henson's Doodle Dreams: Inspiration for Living Life Outside the Lines (Hardcover)
JIM HENSON'S DOODLE DREAMS is a small book that collects together a variety of doodles Henson drew throughout his life. Jim Lewis has taken these drawings and in the spirit of Henson, written short inspiring messages about living a full and happy life. The book opens with a quote from Henson, "I know that I personally have felt quite happy because I've done what I wanted to do. I pursued my interests and have thus managed to combine my business with lots of fun. I guess my only advice is to do what you enjoy, and try to do your best with it." This quote is followed by an introduction by Jim Lewis and a short biography about Henson. JIM HENSON'S DOODLE DREAMS is a great gift for any fan of Jim Henson as well as people who have an interest in art. Just be aware that the words in the book (except the opening quote) are not Henson quotes. If you're looking for a small book like that check out, IT'S NOT EASY BEING GREEN.

Small Book with a Lot of Character, April 30, 2011
This review is from: Jim Henson's Doodle Dreams: Inspiration for Living Life Outside the Lines (Hardcover)
Jim Hanson was the legendary creator of The Muppets and Sesame Street, two of the best-known puppet programs in the history of television. Many of the puppet characters that he created are legends in their own right and have become fixtures of the popular culture. This shows and the characters owe a great deal of their success to Hanson's charming and straightforward wit. Even Hanson "villains" are endearing because of their unique quirkiness.
This small book is a collection of Henson's drawings and doodles, most of which had not seen the light of day before. The drawings are for the most part very elementary, but they clearly reflect Henson's inimitable creative style. The drawings are accompanied with short quotes by Jim Lewis, which try to capture some of the Henson's basic outlook on life. Many of the quotes achieve a measure of effortless profundity, but many others seem commonplace or even trite. Nonetheless, as a whole this is a charming and fun little book.
