This review is from: Jim MacLeod & His Band: Simply the Best Scottish Country Dances (DVD)
Now an octogenarian,I joined an Affiliated RSCDS local club at age 57, soon learned the steps, and found the physical, mental and social stimulus delightful.I met my wife among the dancers and we went to all the formal dancers which came on through the autumn, winter and spring months. Now sadly a widower, having to either cease doing the steps or become a cripple I searched Amazon.com to find a dvd showing the dances so I can watch the dances being performed and still enjoy them in retrospect. This disc shows a few of the titles that I delighted in but mostly what are called Old Time dances here, mainly based on waltz time. However it is the only disc I could find depicting some of the reels that I performed in, but no strathspeys or jigs,e.g.(The Duchess tree,The White Heather Jig). The young Scottish dancers perform excellently on a raised dais in traditional Scottish attire. The crowd of "Old Timers" do their bit in the body of the dance hall, the music is played well and the sole singer of nostalgic Scottish ballads who accompanies on the piano does a good job. For me a better disc is Reel Scottish Dancing! from MusicScotland.com which I have just received, which shows only popular Scottish country dances.
