Book Description

November 7, 2009

How did he do it?  So many years later, it’s still the question guitar aficionados ask about Jimi Hendrix, whose music was like nobody else’s.  Song by song, album by album, concert by concert, this book analyzes how Hendrix achieved that sound--and so, shows you how to achieve it, too.  The book examines all of Hendrix’s equipment, providing a nuts-and-bolts analysis of each of his guitars (including serial number, history, and provenance), his amps choices, and his singular use of revolutionary effects from wah-wahs to overdrives to bizarre-o pedals like the Fuzzface.  A practical reference book like  no other, this volume gives the proper guidance and tools to any guitarist who wants to take a stab at emulating one of the greatest players of all time.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Music enthusiasts associate Jimi Hendrix as much with the Strat/Marshall combo as they do his bandana and bell-bottom pants. This new book offers insight on the maestro’s gear choices through is short but productive career, and documents as many of the original examples he owned as well as parts and pieces thereof.

This book documents Hendrix’s gear beginning with his first guitar—a Supro. Using photographs and the recollections of those on the scene, it traces his move to more professional instruments…The author does a nice job of describing the circumstances that drove Hendrix’s choice of gear. There are period photos and Hendrix using certain instruments, and those same instruments as owned by museums or private collectors today…

Excellent photography abounds here…this book is worthy of a place on the Hendrix enthusiasts’ shelf next to the many other tomes which together help form as complete a picture of the guitarist as be developed now.” - Vintage Guitar --Various

3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Make the Grade..., October 20, 2010
This review is from: Jimi Hendrix Gear: The Guitars, Amps & Effects That Revolutionized Rock 'n' Roll (Book) (Hardcover)
After I got past the pictures, I was disappointed with this book. I've been around the music business and this type of gear all of my life, and I collect all the books I can find of this type. However, I discovered that the author injected too much hearsay and unauthenticated personal opinion into this book.

There are other books that do a much better job of this type of thing, and there is a lot of misleading information here. As another reviewer mentioned previously, there are some glaring technical errors. Normally, technical accuracy would not be expected, but in a book that is specifically about Hendrix's equipment, I expect to see the actual item used by Jimi---not a photo of something similar with a caption stating, "..Hendrix could have used this...".

I feel the book was not researched well enough, and it appears the author is not actually a writer, per se.

I have a titanic book collection, and I have only taken issue with one or two books over the years. This will be one of them. This book falls well short of the mark, and I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

This is a well put together book on the history of Hendrix his mystique, gear and
idiosyncrasies.
Although there are a few small technical incorrections it still covers quite a lot that the average fan might not know.Great photos and some rare ones as well of Jimi
his gear and bands he blessed with his talent and no doubt with his wry sense of humour.
All in all a great buy for the money considering it's a hard back and of such quality.
Hey if you don't like it you can always buy some lighter fluid and give it the Hendrix treatment! DIG?

2.0 out of 5 stars Good premise!!!! Very poor effort!!!!!!!!!, April 2, 2011
This review is from: Jimi Hendrix Gear: The Guitars, Amps & Effects That Revolutionized Rock 'n' Roll (Book) (Hardcover)
I bought this book because of the good reviews (4) posted here. Aside from a historical summary of the guitars that Hendrix had owned in the early and later days there isn't much else new here. I was expecting a detailed look into what he used in his studio recordings, pedals, amps, etc. along the lines of the excellent Beatles fab gear book. Guitarists and aficionados would have a more detailed insight by reading Fender and Gibson books as well as any book on amplifier history. There are many obvious technical errors that shows how little the author knows of his subject. There are no interviews with the road crew or with Eddie Kramer to shed any new light. Very little details on what was inside fuzz face pedals of that era (NKT 275's), amps, etc. I think that only a guitarist who understands vintage gear can tackle this subject and get the REAL info straight on the amplifiers, speakers, tubes, pedals, that were used. This is a good premise for a book but you are better off waiting for something worthwhile.
