This is not a concert album, June 14, 2006
This review is from: Jimmie Lunceford & His Orchestra 1940 (Audio CD)
I had this material when it appeared in phonograph LP form. The tracks were recorded as radio transcriptions, meaning these selections were made for radio stations to play on the air, and none of these selections were commercially released in 78 rpm form for in-home use at that time.
At the time of this transcription session, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) was boycotting radio stations in a dispute over royalty payments. Broadcast Music Inc was formed to fill the void, and all the songs on this album were licensed to BMI. This is why many of the favorite Lunceford hits are not included.
A lot of the songs are ballads featuring saxophonist-vocalist Dan Grissom. Not everyone cares for his singing, but before and after his vocals the Jimmie Lunceford band played brilliantly.
