4.0 out of 5 stars A rather specialised view, December 27, 2002

The difficulty with rating Jimmy Noone recordings is that one cannot fully appreciate Noone's art unless you are, or have been, a clarinettist of a reasonable standard. Noone's extraordinary nuances of tone and articulation have been unmatched by any jazz player to this day. I doubt if Noone had much freedom of choice as regards his recorded output; some of the titles were utterly dreadful material. Although jazz performance usually falls down in it's preoccupation with technical and "emotional" sensationalism, Noone has to be listened to for moments of ravishing beauty..the breaks in Chicago Rhythm (an earlier recording) for example, the sheer poise of Blues jumped a Rabbit, the beautiful articulation in almost all of the up-tempo
tunes, the marvelous rising improvisation of Way Down Yonder, with it's melodic references, and the extraordinary interplay with his sax players......always enhancing their contribution.Jimmy Noone's music is an education for any clarinettist and a feast for the more sensitive ear.Buy 'em all!

Jimmie Noone, the man who is considered the greatest new orleans clarinetist along with Johnny Dodds. But somehow I was dissapointed! Mostly with the song selection. His tone is fine and plays with a great deal of feeling! Perhaps even better than Benny Goodman. My favorite song on the album is "Sweet Georiga Brown"-here Noone can demonstrate his superb style of playing. Another great track to listen to is "I know that you know"-this is the song that become somewhat of a theme song for Noone after his recording in 28 with Earl Hines. Listen to his great solo! There are much better albums to buy by Noone. But this isn't THAT BAD!
