5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have reference book for any guy with a social life.
I always delighted in Jimmy's articles. So, how great is it to have all of his wit and wisdom pulled together in one gotta-have-it volume. Jimmy's laid out all his invaluable "guy advice" in such an easy to read, quick reference form that it'll help every evolving urban male get the skinny on everything from snappy comebacks in tight situations to dressing...

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have reference book for any guy with a social life., November 4, 1999

Jimmy's laid out all his invaluable "guy advice" in such an easy to read, quick reference form that it'll help every evolving urban male get the skinny on everything from snappy comebacks in tight situations to dressing to impress. No insult to Jimmy, but this is the best book to keep handy in the john - where you can get a quick edifying fix before you head out for the day. And did I mention it's funny as hell? A great book for women to have to gain greater insight into how out brains work.

5.0 out of 5 stars The anti-Ann Landers...and about time., October 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Jimmy the Bartender's Guide to Life: Advice on Women, Work, and Other Stuff that Screws Up Men's Lives (Paperback)
I thought this was going to be one of those advice books for men where they tell you what's really bothering you and how to get help, the pop-psychology formula. But I was wrong, completely. This guy should put every shrink in the country out of business. He really pulls no punches. Jimmy gives it to you straight from the gut, which I think is pretty unusual these days. As a man who just ended a relationship with a woman I thought I was going to marry, I really wish I had this book about two months ago. It was all there and I just didn't see it.

There is also a column by Jimmy in Men's Health and now I read that too. This guy could write a book a day and I'd read every one of them.

Jimmy touches on just about every aspect that we've all heard in every bar accross this country! Nothing changes and Jimmy has some "straight from the hip" advice. I laughed, I learned, I loved it!

Great advice and really, really funny, too. I would drink much more heavily if my local bartender was this smart!

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars All The Way Through, November 24, 2001
This review is from: Jimmy the Bartender's Guide to Life: Advice on Women, Work, and Other Stuff that Screws Up Men's Lives (Paperback)
This guy has good common sense when it comes to giving the right answers to men who have problems with women, the job, money etc. I first heard of him through Men's Health magazine, where he has his monthly column. Just about all of his answers to the men's questions on everyday problems will have you shaking your head in agreement. A great, entertaining book. I wish this guy was my bartender.

If you read Jimmy's column in Men's Health magazine, you'll enjoy this book. It was well-spent [money], I must say. Humorous, clever advice from Jimmy made for entertaining, if less than profound, reading. Definitely worth purchasing.

This review is from: Jimmy the Bartender's Guide to Life: Advice on Women, Work, and Other Stuff that Screws Up Men's Lives (Paperback)
The book really reads like a lot of plain talk with a concerned, experienced dad. This would be especially helpful to guys who didn't have a dad around or had a dad that wouldn't talk. I don't agree with everything Jimmy says as I happen to think Garrison Keillor is funny. And a couple of his answers seemed to assume too much. Still, you can learn a lot behind a bar and there's a lot of wisdom in this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Insipid! Perfect for the Victimized Man in Your in Life, April 16, 2003
This review is from: Jimmy the Bartender's Guide to Life: Advice on Women, Work, and Other Stuff that Screws Up Men's Lives (Paperback)
Clearly a simpleton's view of the world that caters to the simpleton audience of victimized men. If you've failed at most the meaningful things in your life, and tend to blame others, you will love this book. Underlying sentiments are jaundiced as it attempts to preach on and aggrandize all that would seem painfully obvious to even the mildly secure and marginally successful man. These guys sound as if their world is dominated by women as they appear to yearn for an all-male utopia. Skip this book entirely...or better yet, go hang out with Jimmy in his bar with a bunch of "guys" while you get drunk and bad advice as the world passes by. What else would you expect from a bartender? PS: Jimmy's Bar is not on the Upper West Side.
