Amazon.com Review

Based on the Nickelodeon movie of the same name, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius follows the adventures of a whiz kid and his robot dog, Goddard. The parents of Retroville have been kidnapped, and it's up to Jimmy to save them while defeating the vile Yokians and the evil King Goobot. Before Jimmy can do that, however, he must find all the parts of a spaceship so he can embark on his quest. At his disposal are a wide variety of gadgets, including lasers, goo guns, jetpacks, rockets, and grappling guns. The game features 24 levels that take place in locations such as Retroville, a meteor field, and the Yokian Empire. Perhaps the strongest part of the game is its multiplayer mode, which supports up to four players via link cable. In this mode, players compete to collect the most coins while slowing the opposition with goo darts.

The single-player game incorporates basic platform elements. Players spend most of the time running, jumping, and collecting objects. It's hardly innovative, but it works for a younger audience. The four racing levels also add some variety. Extremely young gamers may need an adult handy to deal with the game's heavy text and poor save system; the latter uses long passwords to track a player's progress. All in all, this is a good game for fans of the series. It features strong graphics and plenty of the film's flavor. Adept players will breeze through the single-player game, although the multiplayer mode provides a fair amount of replay value. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • Sharp graphics
  • Awesome gadgetry
  • Great multiplayer gameplay
Cons:
  • Single-player game is very basic
  • No in-game saves
  • Lots of text may provide too frustrating a challenge for younger kids

5.0 out of 5 stars jimmy neutron., December 30, 2001

This game is very fun. Some parts do not look exactly like the movie, but some of the characters still fly. The shrinkray comes right back to full size a few seconds after shrinking. This game is entertaining, and I cannot get enough of it. I wish I could bring it to school! It is appropriate for ages 7 and up. But it is easy enough for a 6 year old to play. Buy this game and you will for sure enjoy it.

I bought this game for my 6 year old after seeing the movie...he really likes this one and I am having a blast playing it myself. It's easy enough for my son, a new gamer and I would think challenging enough for more experienced players. All in all, lots of fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars In the league of the classics, August 20, 2002
This review is from: Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius (Video Game)
What a great game: fun, engaging, good graphics and sound, great gameplay, lots of territory to explore.

This game has an easy learning curve which makes it great for the new gamer (my 2nd game). The levels all build upon each other so that as you progress you build gaming skills that help you in later levels.

As with any GBA game, the 3-D levels are kinds difficult to play due to the small GBA screen but refreshing none the less.

The only thing that would keep this from becoming a classic is repeatability. Once you beat the game there are not too many reasons to go back and replay unlike the true classic games.
