5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut
Let's face it, I bought this CD for the hit "Are You Jimmy Ray?"; the only hit from this album. Upon listening to this CD, and consequently loving it, I discovered a true musical genious. 2.0 out of 5 stars One-Hit Wonder But It's Great!
His first (and only) hit was "Are You Jimmy Ray?" a Top 10 gold single in early 1998. Aside from this fun, Elvis-esque retro jam, there isn't any additional material that would sell, but it isn't bad. Jimmy Ray's image is quite appealing; almost hypnotizing. His voice will do just fine when it comes to the retro-rock he hammers on his debut album. I...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut, October 9, 2000
This review is from: Jimmy Ray (Audio CD)
Let's face it, I bought this CD for the hit "Are You Jimmy Ray?"; the only hit from this album. Upon listening to this CD, and consequently loving it, I discovered a true musical genious. While entertaining and energizing, "Are You Jimmy Ray?" is perhaps the least enjoyable song on the entire album. "Goin' to Vegas" is an invogorating, fast-paced song with a cute and catchy chorus. "I Got Rolled" is perhaps one of the most infectious tunes. The intros of "Daddy's Got a Gun" and "Way Low" are reminiscent of, respectively, the whine of climactic scenes in western movies and a country-western song. "Look Inside For Love" definitely has the most catchy hook, what with the "Doodly-doo Da Ba Doom-bop". The predominant instrument in "Trippin' On Baby Blue" is the harmonica, which gives the song a bluesy feel. A definite highlight is "Sex For Beginners", which is a revolutionary swing song. "Let it Go Go" is a wonderful little ditty and "Free at Last" is perhaps the best song of all. It has a wonderful beat and a hint of country-ness.

This CD is extraordinary all around. While relatively short (35 minutes), it has exceptional lyrics and great beats and hooks. Jimmy Ray's CD is definitely pop, but with country, swing, and blues influencing it. Ray is a terrific singer and his CD is perfectly satisfying, exactly what one wants in a CD.

But, be warned: Listening to this CD may leave you feeling breathless and hyper, for it is entirely upbeat. I recommend it as ideal work-out music.

The only troubling aspect is that this CD is already three years old. There is no seeable follow-up coming out, so this CD may leave you yearning for the next. Let's just hope there'll be one.

This album has been one of my favorites since its release over 6 years ago! A really fun album and singer who never took themselves or their image too seriously (yes Timberwoman, I'm talking about you!). Released around the time of the Spice Girls and the whole Brit-pop invasion of the late 90s, I had high hopes that Jimmy would have at least released a follow up album. Unfortunately he did not, so we will never know what really happened to him. Perhaps he is shake-a-shake-a-shaking it in Vegas.

He may have one-hit wonder written all over his handsome face, but it's fun while it lasts.

4.0 out of 5 stars It starts to grow on you., June 24, 1998
By A Customer

It's like Elvis and James Dean taking a ride through Country while having a party with the cast of Grease. At first I didn't like it to much, but after listening to it for a while it started to grow on me. It's the kind of music you listen to while writing, say... a term paper. It doesn't distract you, but it keeps you going.

4.0 out of 5 stars Actually, I say *** and 1/2 *, but that's not a choice, June 19, 1998

Well, pop is making its post-grunge come back, with the forerunners of this movement being the Spice Girls and Hanson, with Jimmy Ray, Aqua, and the Backstreet Boys following close behind. Jimmy Ray has taken the Elvis hair, the James Dean stone-cold face, and the Chuck Berry rockabilly movemnt to a synthesis of beautiful, clean, love sick pop. His closest movement towards risqueness is his amusing "Sex for Beginners"

5.0 out of 5 stars BRING BACK JIMMY RAY!, September 9, 2003
This review is from: Jimmy Ray (Audio CD)
I don't know what happened but poor Jimmy Ray has dissapeared off the face of the earth! where is the second album? the mans a GENIUS. Groovy voice and such a looker.

Brilliant album, one of the last decent music made by anyone in recent years. I'm HORRIFIED that people like Westlife and Justin Timberlake keep their record deals when Jimmy Ray isnt around :(
