Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Real-Life Reader Biographies present the lives of contemporary role models for young readers. These are the stories of real men and women who, despite many obstacles, followed their dreams. They are great for elementary-level research and reports and are fun to read, too.

From the Back Cover

Jimmy Smits grew up in some tough neighborhoods of New York City. His parents moved frequently, and when Jimmy was ten, the family moved to Puerto Rico, his mother's homeland. It was a total shock for Jimmy who spoke no Spanish. Moving around so often made Jimmy feel out of place. He had to play by himself a lot. Playing pretend, making things up had a lot to do with his choice of careers.

In high school, Jimmy played football and was in the drama club. When he starred in the school play, the entire football team came to watch. He worried that they had brought tomatoes to throw at him. Instead, at the end of the performance, the audience stood and clapped. The football players yelled, "Yo, Jim!" He was on his way to a successful career. Fans will enjoy getting to know this personable actor.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun for Jimmy Smits Fans, April 17, 1999

This review is from: Jimmy Smits: A Real-Life Reader Biography (Library Binding)
I can't see anyone who is not a Jimmy Smits fan to be very interested in this book. But if you are a fan and collect Smits bits and pieces, be sure and buy a copy. Included are a few nice photos and a brief outline of the The Big Guy's life. Be warned--there are a few errors in the information, but mostly just little things a fanatic like myself would find jarring. Be warned too--it is a bit pricey for what you get, as it is definately at a juvenile reading level. All in all, as a devout Smits fan, I'm glad to have my copy of one of the few books about this publicity-shy hero!
