Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7-Jimmy, whose story began in The Legend of Jimmy Spoon (Harcourt, 1990), is here 17 and is restless and bored working at his father's fancy-goods store in Salt Lake City. When he sees a newspaper advertisement for "young, skinny, wiry fellows not over 18..." wanted to ride the Pony Express, he is all fired up to go. His two years living with the Shoshone (described in the earlier book) qualify him for the job, and he enters the dangerous and rigorous life of a rider. But he is haunted by memories of the Shoshone, especially by thoughts of beautiful Nahanee, and throughout his adventures he wrestles with the decision to return to them. His exploits are exciting, the characters are well drawn, and period details are well integrated into the plot. While this title can stand alone, it brings readers full circle and those who have not read Legend will certainly want to do so after finishing this one.

From Booklist

Gr. 6-8. In Gregory's fine sequel to The Legend of Jimmy Spoon (1990), 17-year-old Jimmy is working in his father's store and pining for adventure. The two years he spent with Washakie's tribe were far more enjoyable than his life in Salt Lake City, and he longs to return to his Shoshoni family. An advertisement seeking riders for the Pony Express offers an irresistible challenge: the work seems both dangerous and heroic, and it provides an opportunity to travel through Shoshoni territory. There are some exciting adventures and new friendships for Jimmy, but there's also the discovery that carrying the mail doesn't quite live up to Jimmy's glamorous expectations. Gregory packs her short chapters with enough action, drama, and humor to please even hard-core reluctant readers, and her afterword provides additional information about real historical figures who appeared in her story. She also includes a glossary and an extensive bibliography. A painless way to learn about American history and the Pony Express. Chris Sherman

More About the Author

Kristiana Gregory grew up in Manhattan Beach, California, two blocks from the ocean. She's always loved to make up stories [ask her family!], telling her younger siblings whoppers that would leave them wide-eyed and shivering. Her first rejection letter at age ten was for a poem she wrote in class when she was supposed to be doing a math assignment. She's had a myriad of odd jobs: telephone operator, lifeguard, camp counselor, reporter, book reviewer & columnist for the LA Times, and finally author.

"Jenny of the Tetons" [Harcourt] won the Golden Kite Award in 1989 and was the first of two-dozen historical novels for middle grade readers. "Bronte's Book Club" [Holiday House] is set in a town by the sea and is inspired by the girls' book club she led for several years. "My Darlin' Clementine" [HH] takes place in an Idaho mining camp of 1866, based on the song of that name.

Her popular "Cabin Creek Mysteries" are from stories she told her sons when they were little and needed a bribe to go to bed. All she needed to say was, "Do you guys want to hear a Jeff and David story?" and boom they were there. Kristiana's most recent title is "Cannons At Dawn" in Scholastic's Dear America series, a sequel to the best-selling "The Winter of Red Snow," which was made into a movie for the HBO Family Channel.

Kristiana and her husband have two adult sons, and live in Idaho with their two golden retrievers. In her spare time she loves to swim, walk, read, and hang out with friends. She's trying to learn to knit, but isn't yet having much success.

This is a great book for learning about the old times and has alot of neat facts. The author used very good descriptions and put fact on fantasy in the same book. If you love the west then this is a book for you!

My two boys were totally captivated by Kristiana Gregory's two books, "The Legend of Jimmy Spoon" and "Jimmy Spoon and the Pony Express." My boys were so sad when we finished the two novel series. Kristiana, you need to write a third sequel. Not only are these two books well written, but they also are well researched and contain a lot of historical facts!

2.0 out of 5 stars A monkey could write this better!, April 1, 2004
A Kid's Review
Jimmy was always trying to be a hero. Finally, he actually proved it. He was trying out to work for the pony express. He had to show his skills on a horse. That was the only good part in the story. Although it was almost the least favorite book that I've ever read. Jimmy was such a show off at the end because he said,"Oh man I'm a hero!" He also went to boring places where nothing happened. For example, he was in a forest cooking doing nothing at night. That was practicly the whole chapter(...)
