5.0 out of 5 stars From the heart
I picked up this CD after seeing Jimmy Wayne live in concert recently, just him and a guitar - it was absolutely breathtaking!! I can tell he poured a lot of his heart into this CD as well, the songs are melancholy and touching, especially "Are You Ever Gonna Love Me", "Stay Gone" and "I Love You This Much", and the moving "Paper Angels" hit me hard. 3.0 out of 5 stars not quite as good as I expected
So I really like the first 3 songs on this album, and a couple of the other ones are fairly good, but after reading some of the reviews here on Amazon I was expecting it to be utterly fantastic....and honestly its not quite that. Like I said the first 3 are great...After You, Are You Ever Gonna Love Me?, and Stay Gone. Some other okay ones are Trespassin, You Are, and...

I can tell he poured a lot of his heart into this CD as well, the songs are melancholy and touching, especially "Are You Ever Gonna Love Me", "Stay Gone" and "I Love You This Much", and the moving "Paper Angels" hit me hard. But he also cuts loose and has fun on songs like "After You" and "Trespassin'". The last two songs close the album with a bang - "You're the One I'm Talking To" hints about what a plastic society we've become and "The Rabbit" warns "we'll have to answer for the things we've done." What an awesome debut CD - it should be in everyon's collection

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the new young country artists..., December 19, 2004

Jimmy Wayne not only has a beautiful voice and awesome song-writing ability, his music touches the heart. I suspect this is because he's "been there" and in the process has overcome obstacles that would destroy most humans. This is an absolutely perfect debut album and "Paper Angels" and "I Love You This Much" still reduce me to tears. I think Jimmy is going to be unstoppable and I wish him nothing but the best and all the success he deserves. There's so much new talent coming out of Nashville but Jimmy is quite simply the best because he has it all.

4.0 out of 5 stars A compelling, powerful album, October 12, 2004
This review is from: Jimmy Wayne (Audio CD)
I was pursuaded to buy this CD when I heard Jimmy Wayne perform live. I was blown away. This album did much the same--it is full of some powerful material, probably brought about by Wayne's tumultuous life.

The album IS a little ballad-heavy, which makes up-tempo numbers like "After You," "Trespassin," "She Runs," "Paper Angels," and "Blue and Brown" that much more enjoyable. And the topics are pretty serious; only "Trespassin," "You Are," and "Just a Dream" are very happy. Still...Wayne is a credible songwriter and a great singer. His self-titled debut may have its flaws, but it's definitely promising. This guy's gonna go far--and someday, we're gonna look back and say the birth of a legend began here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music Therapy, June 26, 2003
This review is from: Jimmy Wayne (Audio CD)
Every single track on this debut cd from Jimmy Wayne packs an emotional punch. The emotions expressed range from fun-loving ("Trespassin'), heartbroken ("Are You Ever Gonna Love Me?") to recovering ("Stay Gone"). This is a true country cd in that it is about more than just loving and losing, it's about real life. It's about family, friends, society, AND lovers.

These songs express emotions, ideas, and messages in ways that are simple, powerful, and easy to listen to. In addition to all of the great songs, there is an even better singer. Jimmy Wayne has a gorgeous, soulful, and powerful voice. You can tell that he sings from the heart, track after track. Even for people who don't know his background, you can hear that he's singing from real life.

In addition to being a great country singer, he is an inspiration and a role model for all that he has overcome. For all of his obsessive fans (and there are many), the cd packaging and extras are all we could dream for. The cd liner and interview is like taking a peek into his personal journal and life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jimmy Wayne rocks the soul!!!, December 23, 2003
By
William Mozingo Jr. (Surfside Beach, SC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jimmy Wayne (Audio CD)
As we stand at the dawn of a new year, we look back in wonder at what the music industry had to offer. Other than a few memorable hits from country superstars, and the descent of pop princesses into hell, 2003 was not surprisingly impressive. One exception was a new artist, with all the depth of even the most seasoned veterans, who stands out as unique. In case you missed him, his name is Jimmy Wayne.

Be warned: The media is trying very hard to distract the public from this amazing talent by emphasizing his appearance. While being named one of People Magazine's sexiest male vocalists is good publicity, it does little to showcase the integrity of the thirty-one year old North Carolina native's abilities. Behind the pretty face is a stunning voice that combines power, country and pure soul.
Jimmy not only sings and plays guitar, but also co-wrote the majority of the twelve tracks on his self-titled debut.

One may expect an artist who grew up listening to heavy metal bands like Queensr˙che and Iron Maiden to sing aggressive songs about drinking beer and dodging cops. Instead the album is ballad heavy, and Jimmy injects each one with honesty and emotion. You only have to glance briefly at his personal history to know that someone who followed the footsteps of Job couldn't possibly be anything but sincere. Violence, homelessness and the loss of his parents all shaped Jimmy into the person he has become. It was the kindness of a stranger who took him in as a son, which enabled him to turn those problems into a motive for sharing his story.

If there is anything weak about this collection of autobiographical tunes, it may be the track listing. Instead of opening with a strong number, like the folk-rock song "The Rabbit", about his mother's liberation from his abusive father, there is the mid-tempo "After You". Even so, none of the songs are guilty of boring the listener. The diversity keeps the album fresh, with Jimmy's voice blending the tracks together.

Other album highlights include the foot-stompin' "Trespassin'", the pop influenced "She Runs" and the gorgeous ballad "You Are". Impressive as these tracks are, however, they pale next to "I Love You This Much". Released as the second single, this tear-jerker is not only about the relationship between a boy and his negligent father, but also Jimmy's own spiritual awakening. The listener would have to have a heart of stone not to be moved by the narrative of these lyrics.

For collectors, it is worth mentioning that the CD-single for "Stay Gone" includes a breath-taking piano/vocal version of the hit, showcasing the purity of Jimmy's talent.

So, if you're looking to expand your music collection, I would strongly advise you run to the store and purchase this album. Jimmy is an inspiration to anyone who struggles to achieve a higher purpose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Embraces the soul, January 3, 2004
By
Daniel (Brookline, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jimmy Wayne (Audio CD)
My intro to Jimmy Wayne was purely by accident as I was channel surfing and landed on CMT which was playing the video to the incredible "I Love You This Much". To my amazement, I found myself in tears and transfixed, listening to the words of this song. There is a special bond between fathers and sons that can't be explained as I know. So touched by his lyrics and a voice that embraced my soul, I found myself on Apple's iTunes Music Store downloading additional tracks from Jimmy's album! His debut album is one of those very rare albums that you will love from beginning to end. It could very easily become that one CD that remains on the CD player... or in my case, a permanent playlist on my iPod!

Jimmy Wayne is a fine and inspirational example of how one's soul can overcome incredible adversity and hardship in life. His voice, his good looks and remarkable talent will indeed make him one, if not the only, memorable new talent to emerge from the music industry in 2003.

Keep your eye on Jimmy Wayne... his star is fast-rising and will shine brightly for a long time to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars Talented Artist & Good Music, August 29, 2003

I'm not normally a country music fan and that's not really relevant here, this is simply good music. I just bought this CD and was amazed at how good the lyrics and music were. Jimmy Wayne is fantastic, a true artist in every sense of the word. Its really refreshing to find music like Jimmy's today. He's really a cut above the rest of those so-called performers, in an industry innundated with hip-hop, Christinas and Britneys and just plain old crap. Jimmy Wayne has done something special here.

As if the sheer sound of his uniquely soothing yet powerful voice wasn't enough, Jimmy Wayne delivers lyrics that will touch your deepest emotions and move you in a way that only the most talented and honest of artists can do. I cannot recommend Jimmy Wayne's debut album enough. You don't have to be a country music fan to fall in love with Jimmy Wayne's songs-- they cross genre barriers delivering truly memorable music that is far from ordinary. Jimmy Wayne's isn't just the next big thing-- he's here to stay..."Stay Gone" is just the beginning!

Upon buying this CD, be sure to pop it into your computer, and watch the (approx.) 20 minute interview, as Jimmy Wayne will enlighten you, to a more indepth understanding of his music. And how many of his songs came about, for his self-titled Freshman album.

Mixed with the newer sounds of Country music, along with some Southern blues, each song has it's own flavor. And while "Stay Gone" still proves to be Jimmy's strongest (radio) single, there are other songs, that could have been strong contenders, for single releases as well.

"After You" a song about remembering a loved-one from the past, "Tresspassin'" which reminds us of our younger days, and what it was like to 'dance in the moonlight' could have easily made the air-waves, as well as "The Rabbit" which tell's the story, of a troubled family, dealing with domestic violence, resonates a powerful message, thru it's strong and up-beat tempo!

On October 17, 2005, Jimmy Wayne along with co-writer, Chris Lindsey, won an ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Puplishers) Award, for "You Are" which is included, on this album.

There's no doubt in my mind, that Jimmy Wayne is Nashville's most polished vocalist to date. And I look forward to hearing more great music, from this artist.
