5.0 out of 5 stars Nathan - The Next Big Thing?, October 3, 2004
By
Prairie Boy (Winnipeg, CANADA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jimson Weed (Audio CD)
I'm from Nathan's hometown, Winnipeg and have been a fan for some time. So although I may be accused of being biased, I haven't been a booster of local acts before or even been tuned into the local music scene. I just happened to hear a Nathan song on the radio one day a few years ago and found myself compelled to find a CD and a performance.

There is no filler on a Nathan CD. Every song is beautifully woven together with delicate, soulful harmonies, catchy melodies and intriguing instrumentals including wailing theramin, banjo, tuba (on Stranger, their first CD), accordian, dobro, bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar or any other instrument that helps the cause.

Nathan songs shine even brighter when you pull out the liner notes and examine the lyrics. It's then you see deep metaphors and shades of meaning - very smart, satisfying poetry.

Though the band members are young whipper snappers (compared to me) who have just quit their day jobs and been picked up by a label, they sound like old souls and old pros. In other words, there's mismatch between their talent and their recognition.

My prediction is that the recognition will catch up to the talent. Maybe someday, the cover of The Rolling Stone? Or a spot on Austin City Limits? Or a Grammy? Or a membership in the Opry? Seriously, Nathan deserves a spot in the majors and could be the next big thing....

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Canadian Alt-Country, February 11, 2007

My wife bought this album for me on a lark having never heard of them before, but enjoying the samples she listened to at the store - and it was a great find. They have a unique sound all their own, but if I had to compare them to someone it would probably be Kasey Chambers. The songwriting is superb - lyrics that are fun and interesting combined with melodies that are new but sound instantly recognizable. The general sound is alt-country but a bit more twisted than most alt-country artists. I have a long commute to work and so I end up listening to a lot of music and this is one I never get tired of. Buy it and prepare to get addicted!

5.0 out of 5 stars From Red River to Antarctia, March 29, 2006
By
Polar Explorer "Steve" (Vancouver, B.C Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jimson Weed (Audio CD)
Five long months ago before I departed on my first trip to Antarctica I picked up an album by the Winnipeg band, Nathan. I just had time to listen to it briefly before I left on my long journey towards the lure of the South pole. Fortunately for me
(and my Russian comrads)I took along this piece of pure aurel magic. Antarctica has been decribed as otherworldly and with Nathan and their album Jimson Weed on the Stereo the other-world had a soundtrack . We laughed at the prose and wit in which they tie the songs together and in the vastness of that lonely world of ice and snow we felt the warmth of such beautiful voices and with strings attached played air guitar to the many fasinating arangements. Nathan nailed this album, i doubt that it could have been any better and i'm buying more than a few copies to send to Russia so they will stop bothering me... When a band can transcend cultures and continents you know you have a winner, can't wait for the next one, maybe just in time for my Arctic journey, can only hope.
