not bad, but...,

This review is from: Jini Technology: An Overview (Paperback)
The book gives pretty good Jini overview, but it's just that: overview. Don't expect any code examples. Also there is a lot of repetition where the author goes over the same points in different chapters.

Recently I bought this book to get some idea about Jini technology. To my surprise, the book was excellent, well written and well organized. The coverage of this book is very good and the author has taken enough efforts to keep the chapter simple and informative. Chapters 1 and 2 were good enough for me to understand the key concepts of the Jini technology. These chapters build a case for the need for such technology and provides a neat introduction. The highlights is the section - "What is not Jini". Chapters 3,4,5 focused on the architectural component details which I skimmed through. Chapter 6, 7 brings together the concepts of 3,4,5 and outlines the minimum h/w and s/w requirements to build a Jini federation. Chapters 8 and 9 compares Jini technology with other Java technologies ( such as J2EE/EJB, JavaBeans, RMI) and distributed technologies (such as CORBA, DCOM, DNA/.NET, TSPACES). I loved chapter 10, as it provided a complete briefing of "Jini-like" technologies such as MICROSOFT UPnP, E-SPEAK, UDDI based Service Webs (WEB SERVICES) and COOL TOWN. Chapter 11 ventures into the world of pervasive, ubiquitous computing and examines Jini as a potential solution. I skipped Chapter 12 as it was more to do with Jini Community process. Overall the book is an excellent read and I would recommend for any one who would like to know about this technology !

Elegantly and systematically written architectural,

This review is from: Jini Technology: An Overview (Paperback)
I happened to review this book, which has beennominated for "2002 Jolt Awards" yesterday. I liked the architectural layout of the subject matter and its presentation. In spite of me not being a core Java/Jini developer, this book provoked me to continue through the chapters till the end, which very few books deliver. It helped me to get a peep into the Jini window. I strongly recommend for any one who would like to get an overview about the Jini technology!

This review is from: Jini Technology: An Overview (Paperback)
This book opens by introducing Jini's definition as "magic", and proceeds to give a total and complete detail about Jini's architecture including it's pros and cons. The book provides very good information about various distributed computing protocols and highlights the theme that "Jini is just not for hardware services BUT also for SOFTWARE SERVICES". This book has the potential to change the minds of many Java programmers to look at Jini as a potential dynamic distributed architecture for building and deploying software services. The aspects I liked in this book are: To conclude, I would strongly recommend this book as a starter kit for any one who is interested in Jini technology. |
