The earth auger has easy, quick, clean professional way to deep root feeding. All strong steel construction. Perfect for landscapers, do it yourselfers, professional gardeners, tree surgeons and exterminators. 18-inch earth auger has drills holes 1-inch to 1-inch by 4-inch diameter and fits any electric or cordless drill.
I was able to accomplish what I needed to with this auger, but I destroyed it in the process. First, I had to modify the shaft on a grinder, so that it wouldn't slip in my drill. Toward the end of the first day of use, the shaft bent (can't straighten it without breaking it), so that it is no longer useable. Instead of good steel, the Chinese maker used pot metal. I tried to buy American, but couldn't find a small auger on the market. Don't we make anything any more?
It may be my lack of experience. On my first use of the auger I snapped off the end right at the chuck of my 18V cordelss drill, and also bent the auger. The inch or so of the auger in the chuck teeth just snapped off under the torque. I easily reattached the auger to the drill and the bend was tolerable. By backing the auger out often I was able to finish the 2 holes I needed for new birdfeeder poles. The ground is dense clay, rocks and tree roots. Because of ground conditions and my inexperience I give the auger a "3" instead of a "2" but this auger is best-suited to established flower beds with conditioned soil.
i needed to create a 1 inch hole to solidify low-voltage lights with pvc. it worked great - took me about 1/2 hour to do 3 holes. recommend it highly. barbara's spouse.
Okay, so it's cheaply made from cheap materials but it just saved me a couple of hours labor, at this price I'll call that a bargain. You will have to abrade it a little to allow your drill's chuck to grip (I used vice grips to make tiny grooves in the shaft) but I just made 10 holes for one inch PVC pipes in about 10 minutes with no issues whatsoever. The trick is to drill down a few inches at a time, pull the bit out to clear the hole, then repeat until the hole is deep enough.
I purchased the JR-18 through Amazon.com on June 5th 2012. The first time I tried to use it in our flower garden it broke off at the point where the shaft meets the spindles (dirt is firm but not hard, a shovel easily digs in it, and it had been raining so the auger went in and out very easily on the first 2 holes and then on the third hole it went right in and then when reversing it out it just snapped off.). I would like to get a warranty replacement, but non one will respond to my emails about it. I have tried to contact the seller with no response. According to Amazon it is passed the window to be replaced or returned. As all I want to say is when dealing over the internet "Buyer Beware" because after the sale you may never hear from them again.
This auger worked well, except that because it doesn't have any flat areas on the shaft, it spins in the drill chuck. So, you have to constantly stop and tighten the chuck. Also because it spins in the chuck it heats up pretty fast.. But it does drill holes in the earth. As long as you are drilling into top soil.
1/4" Shaft Very Weak Broke Twice Using 1/2" Drill. Not Recomended For Any Soil Other Than Sandy Soil!! Shaft Of At Least 3/8" Would Make This A Better Auger!!
Auger worked really great after I ground a flat place on the shaft where the drill attaches otherwise the drill slips. I then drilled the earth and this thing really dug a hole so well that I had to pull up on the drill to keep it from going too deep.
