I purchased this item from Joann.com along with a wooden yarn swift. The yarn ball winder pictured here makes a perfect ball of yarn. The handle turns very easily and makes a very quick job of winding yarn with little to no hassle.

I only gave this 4 out of 5 though for 2 reasons. One being that the clamp this comes with to clamp it onto a worktable is not very wide, so you can not clamp this onto a very thick table (I use a big table in my workroom that is about 1.5" thick- it was a challenge to get it to work). Also I feel that this item's description should be more clear about how it works. If you purchase a skein of yarn you will also need a yarn swift- this looks like a big wooden umbrella. This is what holds the skein while the winder winds it into a ball. The swift is another $50 piece of the puzzle and many newcomers wont realize they need this.

I purchased both an am very happy- I wound a few skeins of wool in about 10-15 minutes and it would have taken me hours the old manual way.

I agree with most of the other comment left about this winder. Yes, the table clamp is not big enough to fit a lot of tables. I had to resort to using my kitchen island. Only holding about a 4oz ball is also a draw back (a lot of yarn comes in 6 or 8 oz). I don't think you need the wooden/metal umbrella looking thing if you can't afford both. I have balled up about 300 half used skeins of yarn (my grandmother gave me all her old yarn) with just the winder and had no problems. This is a God send to me because it makes center pull skeins, so no more winding skeins into a ball and having to put them in something to keep them from bouncing around the room!! Well worth owning!!!

This yarn ball winder is a very helpful tool for any knitter (or crocheter) to have.
It's very easy to use, and makes winding yarn (from hanks) so much quicker,
not to mention the fact that when you're finished, you have a nice, center-pull, ball of yarn to knit or crochet with---'love it! :-)
