All sets by this band sound pretty much the same, and in their case that's a good thing. Super retro "spy-rock" sounds from the 1965-1972 era characterize this album, like all their others. There is a slightly different flavor overall about the JO SIFFERT soundtrack, though. SSSU tilts the scales a bit more in favor of the laid-back lounge lizard sound, rather than the "creepiness" that is found in most of their other work. Bossa Jo is one of the finest songs they've ever recorded, while Top Speed sounds like something Danny Elfman would have composed for a 60's 007 flick. 70/71 is one of the coolest tracks that could have come right from one of those years. Great stuff, this -- and either you love it or you don't. No in-between! If you are a fan of this band, you simply must have this album for the same reasons you probably already own the others. If you are not, this would be a good place to begin experiencing the unique talents of one of music's hidden talents, Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited.

Hip, old-school backdrop music,

I found an LP of this in a local record shop's bargain bin. The jacket art caught my eye and I decided to go for it.This is a surprisingly cool album, apparently from a motion picture about race car driver Jo Siffert (which I now want to see). The music is completely old-school, a total blast from the past. None of it is particularly high-energy, though from what I can tell, it was intended to be background music - and it's great at that. This would be a PERFECT record to play endlessly in a Le Mans/racing theme bar, or even at a mellow party or just while cruising with the top down during the summer. The only gripe I have with the album is exactly what it was designed to be. I was hoping for a couple exciting songs that would feel more at hme during a driving scene, but there was nothing really fulfilling in that area. Despite that, the album is surprisingly addictive and it has indeed become a staple of my record shelf. 4 out of 5 stars. |
