Book Description

July 2002
This exciting collection of more than 1000 cross stitch motifs is inspired by the seasons and the many events that make up a year. Individual months offer inspiration for portraying an astonishing range of subjects in stitches - from the weather, customs and festivities, to national holidays, fauna and family days out. From the snowdrop to the rose there's a flower for every time of year. Comprehensive advice is given on materials and equipment, on how to stitch the motifs, and with step-by-step instructions on how to create a personal sampler to record the year's events. Superb colour charts are provided throughout.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

What better than a collection of small seasonal motifs as inspiration for a personal sampler built around events of the year? In her sixth cross-stitch motif collection, VersoAa popular British cross-stitch designerAbegins with an essay on using and modifying seasonal motifs in designing a personal sampler. For each season, she includes an alphabet and a band sampler; for each month, there is a floral garland design along with small cross-stitch motifs relating to typical events of the month. For June, for example, there are Father's Day and June bride designs, as well as Winbledon, Le Mans, and fishing motifs. Cross-stitch border and alphabet designs are interspersed throughout. Verso's small, stylized motifs can be mixed and matched in literally hundreds of design combinations. Full-color graphs and clear instructions make for a book that should circulate often in public libraries.

4.0 out of 5 stars A feast for the eye, April 4, 2000
By
Designs for every month, every season and all (British and American) festive occasions - with clear instructions to adapt patterns for a personal note. All in Jo Verso's distinctive and much loved country style. However, Verso does use a lot of half or three-quarter cross-stitches and not everyone likes to make those; they need a good eye and a steady hand and are much harder to do on popular aida fabric than on linen. Then again, there are not many other books where you will find so many designs of people in different outfits (according to occupation and season) and everyday items such as garden tools - very useful for personalized samplers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, February 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Jo Verso's style reminders me of Legoland, simple, charming and appealing to the heart. True to form, her book encompasses everything she can imagine to tell the story of the year's activities. There are samplers for months, seasons and holidays. There are celebration themes from sports to weddings. There are events from Spring planting to Fall canning, to watermelon and ice-cream cones in Summer. She also includes flowers and simple wreathes. And, borders, borders, borders! Another gift for us to learn from. Simple, yes. Educational, definitely. It's a steal at the current rate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seasons in Simple Cross Stitch Patterns, May 16, 2007

This review is from: Jo Verso's Cross Stitch Year (Paperback)
Here's another great book I found at the library and couldn't live without. I love doing cross stitch, but my eyesite just doesn't allow me to do the really detailed patterns anymore. This book is exactly what I look for now days, simple with easy to read instructions. It has four seasons of alphabets, which are adorable and can be used in so many projects. A flower wreath for each month, hundreds of people, animals, places and things to stitch into decorations and gifts. Many can be finished within a few hours. A great book for beginners or advanced stitchers - it's just a lot of fun! Highly recommend.
