Biography

In 2005 Jonathan Coulton dropped out of a perfectly good software career to write music on the internet. He embarked upon a bold experiment called Thing a Week, in which he home-recorded and released a new song every week for an entire year, giving them all away for free. Even he thought he was crazy. But while a struggling music industry fell to pieces over filesharing and shifting business ... Read more in Amazon's Jonathan Coulton Store

I recently saw Jonathan Coulton live, and what a treat! If you haven't experienced Jonathan Coulton yet, check him out on YouTube or on his own website... then make sure you buy this CD. It really functions as a "greatest hits" complilation, with fan favorites "Code Monkey" (trials and tribulations of a tech/computer geek), "Skullcrusher Mountain" (mad scientist fails to impress his female guest), "Tom Cruise Crazy" (needs no explanation!), "Re: Your Brains (zombies!), and "Chiron Beta Prime" (humorous Christmas greeting from an asteroid mining prisoner).

You also shouldn't miss "A Talk with George", a moving song about living life to the fullest.

Most of JoCo's songs are funny, but they're also earnest.... and feel-good... and sing-along worthy....

Jonathan Coulton is one of my favorite performers - he's a genuinely nice person (I had the opportunity to meet him briefly) and he is a clever and talented singer/songwriter. This collection is a sort of 'greatest hits' out of his collection, so if you're new to JoCo, this is a great place to start. Be sure to check out his website for free downloads as well as to purchase music directly from him.

Quick Note: If you don't have younger kids, skip over this review, no hate comments please. If you *do* have younger kids and are sensitive to language, be aware that track 18, "First of May" is unavoidably adult-themed.

My 11-year old son, wife and I are big fans of Jonathan Coulton. His songs are *extremely* clever, original, often hysterically funny and very listenable -- although they are so intricate, they have a way of getting stuck in my head while my mind tries to resolve the lyrics, phrases, etc.

We discovered Jonathan's music first through Pandora on my son's "Weird Al Yankovic" channel, then we played the video games "Portal" and "Portal 2" together and absolutely loved the ending songs he did for those ("Still Alive" and "Want you gone"). So I figured it was time to buy some of his music and there were a lot of songs on here we weren't familiar with.

The thing about Joco's songs are, you really have to listen to the lyrics carefully to get the story/joke/point of the song and we do. For example, we had a lively debate last night about the meaning of the song "I Crush Everything", one camp thought the singer was a Cyclops (cyclops are sons of Poseidon and could be under the sea) the other argued that he was a Kraken or giant squid.

So Anyway, while I totally get that JoCo is not a kids artist, his humor, creativity and sometimes wacky themes (business zombies and humans laboring over robot overlord/protectors) he does attract that audience. The song "First of May" just not kid-friendly to say the least -- the theme is "it's spring, time for outdoor copulation!". No judgement or anything, just a warning to parents.

That aside, I hope the world at large recognizes and rewards Jonathan Coulton's genius, and above all that he continues writing great songs!

This is a Jonathan Coulton "Best of" album so I have to give it 5 stars. Too bad the rating can't go to 11. This is a great example of the artist's range and imagination.

I discovered Jonathan Coulton just recently on Pandora. I've been a big fan of They Might Be Giants since the 90s, so I was listening to a TMBG channel I had set up, and JoCo's "Ikea" was one of the songs by related artists. The infectious melody, TMBG-like wit, and high energy of the song caught my attention right away, so I started seeking out more of his music. As others have said, this collection is a great place to start. It includes his most popular songs such as "Code Monkey", "Re: Your Brains", "Skullcrusher Mountain", and the aforementioned "Ikea", along with enough others to provide some insight into his impressive versatility as a songwriter and performer. He's best known for his zany comical songs, but like the title character in "Code Monkey", he's also a sensitive guy with a "big warm fuzzy secret heart". Usually that sentimentality is somewhat displaced by the humor, but it's nearly always there, and when he really wears his heart on his sleeve as he does on "When You Go", the result is the most breathtakingly beautiful "somebody done somebody wrong song" since Elvis Costello's "Baby Plays Around". The a capella approach makes it even more unforgettable and heart-wrenching. He's quite an accomplished guitarist too, and many of his songs feature chord progressions more complex than what you typically hear in alternative rock, as well as some inventive and catchy riffs. I can't recommend this collection highly enough. If you're undecided, buy it; you won't regret it. His music is vastly better than the mass-produced lowbrow pop most radio stations are playing these days.

I'm glad no one stopped my adult daughter and I as we zoomed down the New York Expressway singing "All we want to do is eat your brains..." at the top of our lungs. My son accused me of child abuse after he got "The first of May" stuck as an ear worm for 2 days after we drove home to NC (it's ok, he's 18). My husband is a bit worried about the fervor with which I sing "I Crush Everything"... JoCo has been a force in our lives for years and it's wonderful to have some of his best and funniest pieces in my Amazon music queue so I can now blast it at ear-splitting levels through my new car-that-is-really-a-big-computer's speakers. The world trembles. Buy this music. You really really need to learn all the lyrics to Re: Your Brains.
