5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource, March 13, 2009
This review is from: Job Hazard Analysis: A guide for voluntary compliance and beyond (Hardcover)
As a safety advisor, author, speaker and workshop leader, I am always looking for material that makes me look smart... Roughton and Crutchfield made that happen in spite of me. This book is a great common sense and yet detailed approach to preventing workplace injuries.

If you are resposnsible for preventing workplace injuries this book must be on your shelf. Doing the "right-thing" was never made easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Safety sytem design, April 14, 2008
This review is from: Job Hazard Analysis: A guide for voluntary compliance and beyond (Hardcover)
Mr. Roughton and Mr. Crutchfield have again written a step-by step, detailed, and very instructional blueprint of how to effectively improve a safety system in any organization. All the key ingredients are in the book - beginning with securing management commitment and promoting employee participation. I think the book is even better suited, designed, and aimed at a new and beginning safety culture of a company, and would be the perfect lesson plan for a new Safety Director wanting to make a difference in the safety performance of a large organization. I particularly appreciated the JHA overview as likening it to a snap shot, frame by frame break down of any particular job that guarantees hazard recognition and reduction through ilimination or control. I have already implemented this Type JHA process in my safety/training basic classes with new employees at my company, and completed a four week climbing and equipment school - without incident. Mine was the first class in over a year to achieve this.
I just used many parts of the JHA book and put it into action, and it worked.

Whether you are a seasoned safety professional, risk manager or considering entering into the field this book will expand your knowledge and appreciation for performing a HAZARD ANALYSIS. Most of us in the Safety and health profession have been exposed to this subject, but the author has taken it to the next level by offering "hands on" experience and invaluable insights. This book also includes numerous checklists and practical examples of how to implement this effective tool and obtain buy-in from your management team. My personal library would not be complete without this valuable resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taking a Closer Look at Reality, October 25, 2007
This review is from: Job Hazard Analysis: A guide for voluntary compliance and beyond (Hardcover)
We have a tendency to overlook hazards in everyday life because we become accustom to our surroundings too quickly. We tend to settle in a comfort zone that we are familiar with and tend to stay there. We feel comfortable doing what we have always done, no one has been injuries. When we are accustomed to our surroundings we begin to ASSUME too many things and then an injury occurs and what do we do? We to react to the situation. So the question becomes, why do we become so accustom to our surroundings? The answer is in this book. This book will discuss reasons that we are confortable in our environment and provides the tools and resources that can help you break this cycle so that you can begin to see hazards for what they really are.

This is a must read book for the professional, student of safety, and the non-professional who wants to understand risk.

5.0 out of 5 stars JHA--New and Improved!, July 9, 2009
This review is from: Job Hazard Analysis: A guide for voluntary compliance and beyond (Hardcover)
JHA's are a required element of all safety programs. However, a finely crafted JHA is a powerful improvement tool, and Roughton and Crutchfield provide safety managers with a comprehensive guide for fully leveraging its inherent energy. As the authors emphasize, JHA's are pivotal in creating a safe interface between the worker and the workplace context. Traditionally behavior based in nature, the new and improved JHA, as Roughton and Crutchfield envision, is systems-oriented and linked to management expectations, training, transfer of training from the classroom to the job-site, and performance measurement. Based not only on the authors' extensive field experience, "Job Hazard Analysis" is also supported by sound theory reflective of innovative safety management practices. Resourceful safety managers seek to inspire sustainable performance, and this book is an essential reference for the transformational safety leader.
