Book Description

January 2006
The workplace is where most of us spend the major part of our lives, in both time and energy, but many of us have trouble experiencing our work as a holy and fulfilling activity. Inspired by the belief that God is everywhere, On-the-Job Prayers is the workplace prayer book that we have been waiting for—practical, concise and effective.

Focusing on the day-to-day feelings and events that almost everyone who works will face, such as "Escaping the Rat Race," "Monday Morning," "Reshaping Stress," and "If I Could Change Jobs," On-the-Job Prayers uses an integrated approach to prayer utilizing Scripture, a reading from a variety of thinkers and writers on the spirituality of work, and concludes with a workplace prayer written or chosen by the author. Readings come from people like Rudolph Giuliani, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Florence Henderson. There are also three helpful indexes: Source Index, Scripture Index, and Subject Index.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making the World Function, March 22, 2006
This review is from: On-The-Job Prayers (Paperback)
In his introduction, Thompson, a retired pastor, offers a variety of definitions of "work," the most encompassing being "what we do to make the world function." The major part of our time and energy is spent in our particular workplaces, and it is in those places we may rely on God to listen, forgive, encourage, and empower us. In the "work" of writing this book, Thompson has provided useful tools in the form of scripture, reflections, and prayers that will help us meet the challenges and celebrate the successes of our workplace.

The author suggests that we set aside a specific time each day, preferably before starting work, to consider and pray about our jobs. Some will visit the 101 prayer pages sequentially; others may choose topics from the source, scripture, or subject index. Let's say things at work (whether outside or inside the home) are chaotic. Topic 5, The Workers' Twenty-Third Psalm, contains verses 1-3 and an edited version beginning "The Lord is my real boss, and I shall not want. He gives me peace when chaos is all around me." The accompanying workplace prayer acknowledges God's peace as greater than the surrounding chaos, and expresses faith and hope: "You know what I face at work today...and you promise to be with me in every discussion, decision and difficult task."

Thompson has produced a resource that can help all of us find and keep God in our daily efforts to make the world function.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fortitude!, January 31, 2006
This review is from: On-The-Job Prayers (Paperback)
The globe seems to be getting larger and spinning faster, and "work" can be unfulfilling and anxiety-provoking because of it. Solace and refreshment are here (see Hope for a Better World, prayer 64). On-the-Job Prayers provide courage for each day's journey, and helps to bridge the gaps.

For the lucky minority who find joy in the job they do, have spirited workplaces with enlightened management, or don't feel threatened by workers on the other side of the globe, this wonderful little volume reminds us, above all, to be grateful for the calling we know as "work".
