More About the Author

Dave Henderson was born in San Francisco, CA and spent his early years as an Air Force dependent growing up mostly in the Southeast and Northeast U.S. He graduated from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL and immediately entered the Marine Corps serving 20 years as an armor, infantry, and logistics officer retiring as a Lt. Colonel. Since retirement he has been a defense contractor in the maritime sector, author of Job Search Marketing Your Military Experience, and a resume writer for the Air Force Association since 1990. He has also provided resume assistance reviews and critiques to The Destiny Group from 2006 to the present. His career transition work, workshops, and resume writing has assisted over 5,000 officers, NCO's, and junior enlisted members of all services for over 24 years. Job Search has been extremely successful over the years and recently came out in its 5th Edition. It was also picked up by amazon.com as a featured Kindle Book.

Comments from several satisfied customers from the Air Force Association include the following:

"It was refreshing to have someone look at my resume who understands both the military and civilian world. You do very good work." - Lt. Colonel USAF

"The honesty of your comments and the directness of your suggestions made it very clear where the shortcomings of my resume were and how they could be improved." - Sr. Master Sergeant, USAF

"You are definitely the foremost resume writer around--I'm very pleased." - Captain, USAF

5.0 out of 5 stars The single best source to start the transition process, September 12, 1999
By A Customer
I was very fortunate when I made the decision to depart the service--I had access to Dave Henderson's original edition of "Job Search: Marketing Your Military Experience." I did have multiple skills and considerable experience but very little idea just how to identify and package them, and how they should or could apply to my new life as a civilian.

Dave Henderson's clear, logical, and carefully tailored advice was the best tool in my own transition from an Air Force career to a satisfying and very rewarding civilian career. I have followed his updates carefully. They were all good, but Edition 3 is the best. Henderson has kept tuned to the times.

If you were going to limit yourself to one source, which you really should not-edition 3 of "Job Search: Marketing Your Military Experience" would be the one to choose. The material is well organized, easy to follow and is very careful to avoid the "one size fits all approach." The advice, well grounded in years of experience and highly tuned to today's job market, is individually tailored to meet needs ranging from a young NCO leaving the service after one hitch, to a senior officer with decades of experience.

The latest tools of the trade are employed-such as recognizing and harnessing the increasing utility of the internet both in researching future employers and in advertising your own skills and experience to a wider range of potential employers. There are plenty of solid examples clarifying the entire career transition process--from the early steps identifying your personal skills and interests, through the difficult and tedious, but critical, resume development phase--to the final stages of salary and benefit negotiation. Every step is a vital one, and this book offers a clear, concise, readable and well-researched blueprint toward your future. You can get there from here, and this book is a proven way to do it! Joe Breen, Colonel, USAF (Ret.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Job Search Marketing your military experience, August 20, 2000
By
Derek Wheeler (Jakarta, Indonesia) - See all my reviews
Anyone thinking about leaving the service should read this book at least 18 months before separating, whether leaving after one hitch, or a 20+ year retirement. Mr. Henderson has laid out in a clear, logical manner all the things that must be considered before transitioning into the civilian work force. Most military people simply haven't thought about leaving the service until it is upon them. This book is a "primer". It will get you started in the creation of your own personal transition plan, one that meets your needs. Not a "one size fits all" book by any means, you build your own plan. The book lays out a foundation, the details are your personal choice. In fact, the amount of other sources of important information referenced in the book is one of it most valuable strengths.

This book is in my view the best out there for anyone separating from the military. This is especially true in light of todays internet use for obtaining employment. In addition, the resume section is clearly excellent. As a retired commander from the Navy I recommend the book without reservation!
