The single best source to start the transition process,
By A Customer
This review is from: Job Search: 3rd Edtiion (Job Search: Marketing Your Military Experience) (Paperback)
I was very fortunate when I made the decision to depart the service--I had access to Dave Henderson's original edition of "Job Search: Marketing Your Military Experience." I did have multiple skills and considerable experience but very little idea just how to identify and package them, and how they should or could apply to my new life as a civilian.Dave Henderson's clear, logical, and carefully tailored advice was the best tool in my own transition from an Air Force career to a satisfying and very rewarding civilian career. I have followed his updates carefully. They were all good, but Edition 3 is the best. Henderson has kept tuned to the times. If you were going to limit yourself to one source, which you really should not-edition 3 of "Job Search: Marketing Your Military Experience" would be the one to choose. The material is well organized, easy to follow and is very careful to avoid the "one size fits all approach." The advice, well grounded in years of experience and highly tuned to today's job market, is individually tailored to meet needs ranging from a young NCO leaving the service after one hitch, to a senior officer with decades of experience. The latest tools of the trade are employed-such as recognizing and harnessing the increasing utility of the internet both in researching future employers and in advertising your own skills and experience to a wider range of potential employers. There are plenty of solid examples clarifying the entire career transition process--from the early steps identifying your personal skills and interests, through the difficult and tedious, but critical, resume development phase--to the final stages of salary and benefit negotiation. Every step is a vital one, and this book offers a clear, concise, readable and well-researched blueprint toward your future. You can get there from here, and this book is a proven way to do it! Job Search Marketing your military experience,
By Derek Wheeler (Jakarta, Indonesia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Job Search: 3rd Edtiion (Job Search: Marketing Your Military Experience) (Paperback)
Anyone thinking about leaving the service should read this book at least 18 months before separating, whether leaving after one hitch, or a 20+ year retirement. Mr. Henderson has laid out in a clear, logical manner all the things that must be considered before transitioning into the civilian work force. Most military people simply haven't thought about leaving the service until it is upon them. This book is a "primer". It will get you started in the creation of your own personal transition plan, one that meets your needs. Not a "one size fits all" book by any means, you build your own plan. The book lays out a foundation, the details are your personal choice. In fact, the amount of other sources of important information referenced in the book is one of it most valuable strengths.

Its the most helpful,
This review is from: Job Search: 3rd Edtiion (Job Search: Marketing Your Military Experience) (Paperback)
This book is in my view the best out there for anyone separating from the military. This is especially true in light of todays internet use for obtaining employment. In addition, the resume section is clearly excellent. As a retired commander from the Navy I recommend the book without reservation!

Got results for me!,

This review is from: Job Search: 4th Edition (Job Search: Marketing Your Military Experience) (Paperback)
I found Colonel Henderson's book extremely helpful. He has done a great job of finding the methods, the resources, the skills, and the best practices that a person leaving the military needs to ensure his of her landing a great civilian "gig." I could have spent weeks trekking around from office to office - counselors, family service centers, base info sites, etc. - but this book has it all in one place. There were even lots of tips about writing a good, impressive resume - things I never would have thought of. I disagree quite strongly with Cpl. Loveland in his review, which said the opposite - that he could have done the legwork himself and saved a few bucks (the cost of this excellent book).

Great book, very helpful.
Additionally, I like using [...] to look for jobs because it has jobs only from employer websites and far more jobs than you will find on other job boards. In this economic crisis, military jobs are considered to be the safest in terms of longevity (not to mention the nice retirement). So check out that website for additional help!

Better Military Job Search,
This review is from: Job Search: 4th Edition (Job Search: Marketing Your Military Experience) (Paperback)
Although this book is a good source of information, I personally prefer using [...] to search for jobs because it lists jobs only from employer websites and has far more jobs than you will find on any other job boards. There is a wealth of information available for anyone with military experience who is know looking for a job in the civilian sector. I would recommend this to all my friends who are in the armed services.

transitioning military help,

This review is from: Job Search: 4th Edition (Job Search: Marketing Your Military Experience) (Paperback)
Bradley-Morris, Inc. (BMI) commends Mr. Henderson for endeavoring to assist transitioning military. As the largest military to civilian placement firm, we have found that the most successful military job seekers who utilize our free services are the ones who appear that they are ready to make the transition to the civilian work force in their appearance, speech and dress.
However, we would quibble with this advice: "Stick to the firms that advertise in Army, Navy and Air Force Times..." We believe this advice is out of date. We also believe that no one should pay a fee for job seeker services. There are too many good free services available to military job seekers. Bradley-Morris, Inc. Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Job Search: 4th Edition (Job Search: Marketing Your Military Experience) (Paperback)
As a military member about to retire I bought this looking for good advice and maybe to use as a reference. It's a waste of money. You can get the same info at your base family service center (or whatever each branch calls it) for free AND talk to a real person that will help you with questions. Do the leg work and save your cash.
