These spikes are not like the gum-stick size for indoor plants, they are 3" x 1.5" big and very potent, I used a whole one for the first time trying these and within one week my luscious green rose bush leaves turned into brown, dried and crispy potato chips. Which must be
what is called 'burn', the spike had already crumbled into pieces so could not remove easily from the soil, even though directions state one or two spikes per plant depending on size, I would use half of one the first time and if no problems try a whole one 6-8 weeks later. There is no other improvement in growth or bloom yet just damage to the foliage.
Update: 3 weeks later the foliage is coming back green and some red tips which is a good sign but no buds yet, the crispy leaves have almost disappeared, so maybe the frequent watering diluted the strength or the spike is wearing out. so again try half a spike at first.
