Entertaining and informative guide with misleading title,

This review is from: Jobs in Japan: The Complete Guide to Living and Working in the Land of Rising Opportunity (Paperback)
Having been raised for some time in Japan (where I still occassionally return to visit relatives and friends), I agree and can relate to the information this guide presents. The authors certainly researched the culture of the country present some good insights into what anyone visiting for the first time can and will expect. The prose is also amusing and informative. One caveat to anyone looking into this book. I agree with the other reviewer who says this book is only good for anyone wishing to teach English in Japan. It does NOT provide information on other professions. This is a serious flaw in a book which could have provided valuable material on jobs related to industry, tips for people doing business in Japan. Bottom line: there are certainly many other opportunities for Americans in Japan besides teaching English!

A book that was great in its time,

I used this book heavily when I went to Japan right after college in 1985. In its time, it was a great book, painting a realistic picture of how to get started in Japan by teaching English. I ended up staying ten years, transfering to a high-tech marketing job after 3 years of English teaching. The tone of the book is just what you'd want: friendly and realistic. Nowadays, so much information is available on the web, so the info in this book might be less necessary. Nevertheless, I would hope there is some book that would still do what this one does: Tell you how to get started in Japan teaching English.

I read this book before I traveled to Japan in 1988, and I found it helpful--encouraging without the sugar coating some guidebooks have. I recommend it to anyone who wants to make a new start living in Japan and working as an English teacher.
