I was looking for a light tripod for SONY NEX 5N, which is 17.1 oz with its 18-55mm lens. If you are looking for a GorillaPod for NEX 5N with a different lens this piece of info might be useful: the weight of the body+battery+memory card+strap is 10.2 oz. My choice was between GorillaPod GP2 that has over a hundred great reviews and this new model. I decided to go with the new model for two reasons: it supports slightly heavier cameras (giving me room to add a bigger lens to this camera) and has dual action knob for horizontal and vertical orientation.

The tripod fits my camera perfectly: the quick release fits tightly and holds the camera securely. I tried wrapping the legs on various odd objects and various angles, it worked extremely well! Even when I press the button to take a photo there is no noticable bounce. In a low light I would use a timer, which I do even with a regular tripod. An added bonus I did not expect is that it fits into my camera bag if I tilt down the head.

I am attaching a couple of photos for illustration.

Below are some details I collected while deciding which GorillaPod will be the best for my camera. I hope others will find the summary useful as well. The most important thing is to buy the GorillaPod that can handle the weight of your camera (with the heaviest lens it takes, battery, etc).

I am a big fan of GorillaPods. I've got a GorllaPod Original that regularly accompanies my old Canon Digital Elph cameras whenever it leaves the house. It's tiny and handy, but not suitable for anything larger than the smallest of cameras. There are times, though, when I need to support one of my larger point-and-shoots, or a compact DSLR, and that's where this model shines. It's more rigid than the original , has a level and a real ball head, and provides more than adequate support for my Lumix. Twisted around a tree branch or a chair back, it's strong enough to support a compact DSLR with a small lens (although if your main camera is a DSLR, you're still better off with the GorrilaPod DSLR-Zoom or the GorillaPod Focus).

What this particular GorillaPod is designed for, of course, is the new breed of compact, interchangeable lens cameras that are starting to displace DSLRs in the market. I've been looking into switching to the new Nikon J1 camera system, and this should be a great mate for that camera. Now this is not going to replace a real, full-size tripod. That's what my big tripods are for. But when I'm walking in the woods, I don't necessarily want to carry twenty or thirty pounds of heavy-duty tripod and head. Where the GorrilaPods shine is in portability. If you have room for a camera, you have room for a GorrilaPod that will work with that camera. With my GorrilaPod Original I've made a lot of time-exposure shots and low light shots that just wouldn't have been possible otherwise. It's not limited to camera use. You can use it to support an iPhone or iPod with the appropriate clamp. With the right adapter, you can use it as a microphone stand, or a stand for a webcam. All in all a very handy tool.

Like with many other products, it can be said that the best tripod you have is the best tripod you have with you. Very true in my case. I have a very nice Benro tripod that I use with more specific times, but I don't bring that everywhere so I often find myself resting my camera on a ledge or anything else I can find to give more stability to my Canon PowerShot SX20IS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-Inch Articulating LCD.

I've long heard about the GorillaPods but assumed it was a lot of hype. I was wrong. Well there is a lot of hype. But the hype is right. This is a great tripod.

Fully articulates to use with just about any surface. I had it resting on a table as easily as hanging it upside done from a bar. The joints are stiff enough to hold firm without being so stiff it becomes a pain to move it around. And I love the balance, because if I have one critique of this tripod it's that once the legs are bent, it isn't quite intuitive to get them straight to function as a standard, level tripod. Having the built in level helps avoid having to depend on far too undependable eyes. The easy release clip connects simply and unlike so many tripod clips, it's small enough to just leave on the camera.

Can you tell I love this tripod? I totally do. I should have gotten it a lot earlier. It's small enough to bring everywhere and ends up being useful in many situations a larger, seemingly better, tripod wouldn't.

Get it. If you're on this page you're obviously thinking about it and considering it for some reason. So, just go ahead and get it. You'll be glad you didn't wait anymore.
