Joby has made a name for itself by creating a slick concept tripod that can bend and twist in an infinite number of directions. They have taken this same tripod and bolted all kinds of connectors to the top. Some things were a great idea; some sounded like a great idea but were horrible in execution. Unfortunately this iPhone 4 holder is the latter.

If you have tried Joby products before and love their tripods, this will please you very much, and you might just want to go ahead and purchase this tripod.

This new bolt on for the iPhone 4 (this will NOT work with an iPhone 3) is a hard plastic bumper wrap for the edge of the phone. The top of the tripod has a U shaped clip you snap the plastic bumper into. It isn't too hard to imagine breaking the U shaped clip over time. Joby also included a little tiny standard tripod screw to mount very light digital cameras.

I was extremely disappointed with this product; everything about it feels cheap and unstable. The worst part of this tripod is the stiff polystyrene case that has to be wrapped around an iPhone 4. This is a two part "bumper" made out of hard plastic. A three inch piece of plastic pops off the bumper, and you have to open up the C shape carefully and snap it around the phone. Then you have to pop the straight piece back on the phone. The bumper just feels awful in my hand while I use the phone. The rim is sharp and provides no protection for the back of the phone. Given that the plastic is so hard, I doubt that this wrap would protect the phone if dropped.

The phone can be attached horizontally or vertically. There are two little nubs where you should align the U clip for maximum holding power.

The hard plastic wrap includes two metal buttons for volume control, a metal on/off button on the top, and orifices for all the other ports on the phone - headphones, speaker, microphone... Apple iPod connectors will fit with the wrap on. Bigger after market connectors will not fit, the orifice is just too small and the plastic too thick and rigid.

Once mounted, the phone is really up flapping in the wind. There is no really good way to release the camera shutter or start video without wiggling the phone around. The tripod has so little mass and is wiggly, that the phone just won't stand still to eliminate vibration. Wrapping the legs around things helps steady the phone a bit more. But that wrapping action is a pain in the neck and not always easy to find a pipe the right diameter in the right spot to get your picture.

Pictures were really not much sharper taken with this arrangement compared to carefully holding the phone steady either leaning against a solid object or using good old standard camera holding techniques.

For all the trouble this little device is to haul around (it doesn't fit in a pocket), I really don't find it very useful. The plastic is cheap, the construction is bad, and the bumper case makes my awesome phone fell like cheap junk.

What doesn't seem to be totally clear is that to use this product, you need to remove your iPhone case and put on their (seemingly flimsy) piece of plastic bumper-like case (shown in the pictures above) in order for the rails of the holder to properly grasp your iPhone. Without that being on your iPhone, it just doesn't work. If you put it on, though, it seems to work very nicely. With my iPhone case (which I love), it's a day-long job almost to put on/take off so it's there forever. As a result, the Gorillamobile is quite impractical for me unless I were doing a multi-hour photo shoot or something similar. I'd hoped to be able to have this on my desk to read from the iPhone while typing on my laptop but the hassle of getting my regular case off and back on afterwards and the fear of breaking the black plastic iPhone 'bumper' will keep me from doing that except in dire situations.

I bought this to hold a XT I/R Transmitter. The legs allows me to keep the transmitter off the ground. I can even attach it to a pole or fence. The case for the iPhone 4 is like a heavy duty Apple bumper case. I like that the case has metal buttons. My previous iPhone case was the apple bumper because I liked the open back and the metal buttons. The Joby case also can use older or 3rd party Apple Dock connector cables unlike the Apple Bumper case that forced you to use the slightly smaller iPhone 4 Dock Connector cable. I would rate this case better then the Apple Bumper. To attach your iPhone 4 to the tripod you simply slid the case alone on a set of rails to connect the two.
