5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, November 22, 2002
By A Customer
This is a wonderful book with beautiful illustrations! It covers basic gardening techniques for growing runner beans as well as the wonderful relationship between Jody and her grandfather. My own children enjoyed growing their own runner beans up a similar teepee! A true delight for young and old!.....And if you have young "picky eaters," perhaps this will motivate them to try their beans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming story teaches the cycles of life, June 1, 2009
In this lovingly illustrated book, a young girl learns about the cycles of life from her grandfather. Rather than tell the girl what is going to happen, the grandfather's refrain as he guides her in growing green beans is a patient, "wait and see". Jody makes her own discoveries as the seasons change. In the background, the theme is echoed as the family anticipates the birth of Jody's baby brother. A timeless story that if it weren't for the telephones, could be in any era. (Today I suppose "Granda" would be video conferencing with Jody like my girls do with their grandmother!). I've just started gardening with my preschoolers and this story captured their attention. I would recommend it for families with young children or pre-K or kindergarten classrooms.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Story, May 20, 2008
I love the story of the grandfather passing down his love of gardening to his grandchild. I love the fact that the book is reinforcing healthy foods and gardening. Each page has really cute illustrations and the story is just right. It keeps kids wondering what is going to happen next and also gives you plenty of opportunity for activities. When I used this book with Pre-K & Kindergarten we planted red beans and waited for them to sprout.
