Review

From Eater.com:Coffee nerds, rejoice: here's a book on coffee from New York coffee shop joe. Without getting "too political or preachy about it," the book promises to explain the coffee process from bean to brew and hopefully get you making better cups of coffee. "With such increased and fierce competition for your ritualistic, caffeinated pleasure throughout the city, Jonathan Rubinstein and Joe continue to champion more than just what is in the cup. Not only is the coffee delicious, but it is reliably prepared by expertly trained staff, who possess intimate knowledge of their product while consistently embodying the warmth and humble graciousness that has become a hallmark for the banner under which they pull their shots. I LOVE Joe!!!!" —Sam Lipp, general manager of Union Square Cafe "People often ask me what the best coffeemaker out there is, and the answer is rather simple. The best coffeemaker out there is just a person who cares about the cup. Someone who is willing to invest the time and effort needed to make a proper brew will always be better than any machine or gimmick on the market." —Michael Phillips, World Barista Champion and cofounder of Handsome Coffee Roasters "As a coffee professional, one of the most magical moments is when a person tastes a truly delicious coffee for the very first time. Their eyes light up, a slow smile spreads across their face, and you know that you've just helped surpass all their expectations for what a cup of coffee can be." —Amber Fox, coffee control director and green coffee manager at Ecco Caffè "Joe is my community center. The place I go with my kids, with my wife, with my coworkers—whenever we need a real cup of coffee. It's the place I feel most at home, away from home." —Randy Garutti, COO Shake Shack

From the Inside Flap

This beautiful, hip guide to the world of coffee is brought to you by New York City's popular connoisseur coffee chain joe. Join owners (and siblings) Jonathan and Gabrielle Rubinstein as they welcome you into the tight-knit international specialty coffee community of committed growers, buyers, roasters, entrepreneurs, baristas, and drinkers. Their mission: to source, purchase, roast, serve, and drink the world's finest coffees. By explaining how exemplary coffee is produced—and revealing the actual brewing techniques used to create great coffee at home—this fully illustrated book provides all you need to explore and enjoy the vast world of coffee. "I certainly don't want to get too political or preachy about it, but I hope that with the next cup of coffee you consume, you put just a bit more thought into where it came from and think about all of the people who had a hand in getting it into your cup." —Amanda Byron, vice president and director of coffee at Joe

Finished Joe the coffee book after, unsurprisingly , a caffeine fueled marathon read. What a delicious book! Wonderful photos and lucid, warm prose walked me thru so many interwoven worlds: joe from its beginning to today, in it's relentless pursuit of coffee and community, the world of coffee from bean to cup with all the stops along the way, how a cup is made, in store and at home, and loads of novel fun images and vignettes throughout. I learned so many nuances bout something that's long been part of my daily experience.
It's an ode to new york too. Passionate, hard working, dedicated funny entrepreneurs running with and sharing a bright idea. Our city is filled with them but it's always a treat to pull back the curtain and peer inside.

Joe: The Coffee Book
Joe Coffee is one of the most popular coffee shops in New York. They are passionate about coffee and they do a great job. Whats even better is they want to share their knowledge with their customers.
I've worked in coffee for nine years and I've spent a fair amount of time training Baristas and and home brewing enthusiasts. This book is perfect for the entry level Barista and home enthusiast. It's kind of incredible how awesome this book is.
There are six chapters that range from roasting to the community of coffee. I love the fact that they highlight the coffee community. It's a major part of the equation that gets left out. They introduce the reader to Baristas, chefs, customers and even a coffee producer.
The Bringing it home chapter is such a great guide for brewing coffee at home. Joe walks you through the most common home brewing methods in a thorough easily understood way. The photographs of grind size are so useful!
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in coffee.

Bought the Joe coffee book at one of the locations in Philadelphia. It was a nice, if a bit quick read. I found it to have a good story about why the owners started (though i would have loved a little more!) as well as going over the various brewing methods. I found all of them to be useful and the good usage of imagery and graphics helped me understand what they were talking about in spots. I'm a visual guy in that sense. There's also a nice sections with quotes from other people in the industry. Nothing mind blowing there, but I found the three parts when combined helped paint a pretty complete picture of the joys in our pursuit for an excellent cup.
