Book Description

March 18, 1987
"This is the book for the serious DiMaggio and sports-as-culture buff. [Moore] . . . has sifted throught most of what has been written and rumored about the Yankee Clipper in newspapers, magazines, books and even songs. The narrative portion--there's also a bibliography and DiMaggio's baseball stats--is divided into two sections: DiMaggio's life on and off the field, and his evolving stature as a mythic figure. All rendered in sensitive, but refreshingly unsentimental prose." USA Today "Anyone serious about building an excellent baseball library or interested in the role of sports in American society should get a copy of this book. . . . An excellent and well-researched book." The Sporting News

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Though Moore's book is presented in a scholarly fashion, it is a readable, enjoyable biography that forces readers to examine their heroes and what it is that makes them attractive.”–Booklist

“A complex view of an American baseball legend. Twelve chapters, each headed by a quote to set the tone, chronologically discuss DiMaggio's professional career and personal life from his roots as a son of Sicilian immigrants and one of nine children to his death in 1999.”–School Library Journal

5.0 out of 5 stars great biography, April 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Joe DiMaggio: Baseball's Yankee Clipper (Paperback)
Of the many biographies written about The Yankee Clipper, this is by far the most intelligent. It goes beyond the rah-rah nature of many common sports books and offers a fascinating analysis of DiMaggio's baseball career and impact on popular culture. Truly an important work and a book that should be part of any comprehensive personal baseball reference library.
