This review is from: Joe Morris / Fur (Audio CD)
I really liked it first time through. There weren't any weak moments or sections where my interest would drop. When it was over I immediately put it in the play again soon pile.
Later that day, while listening for the second time, I read the sleeve notes. Here I learned that Joe Sexton, the tenor player, and Croix Galipault, the drummer, are in their early twenties and that the five selections on the disc are all improvised. I left it in the player so I could listen the next morning. Joe Sexton's tenor playing captivates right away. He's got a gritty tone that can flutter and dance in a way that conjures Evan Parker and just when you think you know where it's going, the attack changes to longer, more liquid phrasing. Every time I play the disc, the tenor is what grabs and lures me along from rough terrain back to terra firma. Even though this guy is young, he's got a lot to say with a voice that is very mature. Croix Galipault helps embellish the music with well chosen percussive statements. There is nothing forceful about his playing and the textures he creates are ideal for this trio alignment. He is another young player to watch for. Joe Morris is the elder statesman in this situation and it's nice to see that he's bringing along the younger guys. His bass playing is absolutely phenomenal in this improvised set. He has a way with the bass that is very much his own and this adds enormously to your listening pleasure. All told, it's a set that is well worth hearing and one that you'll return to again and again.
