Customer Questions & Answers

Customer Reviews

This jacket fits me very nice and is very comfortable.
Landon
The rain liner also works as a bit of a wind breaker which is nice for riding in ~60 degree weather and in the summer it should have alot of ventilation for hot days.
James
I wear a large and this jacket fits perfect for a large.

I went down in this jacket last fall. 45 mph lowside and this jacket held up great! Elbow imact absorbed and slid with it zipped to my Joe Rocket Alter-Ego pants. Got up without a scratch. Great gear at a great price!

I've owned this jacket for 6 months now, and have been wearing it 6-7 days a week. Its been the wettest Australian summer I can remember and (predictably) I have had low-side accident. Time for a review!

Sizing.
Buy one or maybe even two sizes smaller than you initially think. For reference I am 174cm / 82kgs (5'9" / 180lb) - I initially bought a large jacket and was swimming in it. I bought a small jacket and that fit perfectly. Half-a-star off for the huge sizing.

Everyday summer wear.
This Jacket is outstandingly good. Many people asked "how can you wear all that gear on hot days", the mesh just works! I ordered a white/black jacket but received a black/black one, at the time I didn't mind but in hindsight I should have asked for a replacement. Black is not a cool color standing around in the Australian sun.

Armour details.
The shoulder and arm armor is actually identical and interchangeable, this is probably for manufacturing efficiency but doesn't seem to have caused any issues. The main back armor plate is two-layer foam rubber (about 1.5cm thick) - I didn't notice it was there during riding (until I hit the road!). There is also side-of-rib and hip armor sewn into the jacket (not removable, and in smaller panel so as not to impact mobility).

Impact protection.
I had a low-side accident and my bike was a write-off. I didn't hit the road *really* hard (thankfully), but I did slide across one lane of traffic over a gutter and over the verge... I got up straight away - body armor is good!!! People talk up Kevlar jeans etc for abrasion resistance but I think impact protection (ie. rubber and foam) is even more important.

I looked at and tried on many different summer mesh motorcycle jackets but none of them compare to the Joe Rocket Phoenix 5.0. Initially I wanted to save some money and buy a cheap $70 jacket but after receiving my JR I can't believe I even considered other less expensive jackets. The fit alone makes it well worth the money. At 6'2", 180# many other mesh jackets were very big and baggy in the arms as well as the chest. No doubt riding in them would have been uncomfortable as the extra material would've flapped in the wind quite a bit. I don't exaggerate when I say that the Medium Tall is a PERFECT fit. If you're tall/thin like me do yourself a favor and buy a Tall size. Fit is everything. Forget about color-matching your jacket to your bike. I was going to do that but a good fitting jacket looks 100x better (and feels 100x better) than a color-matched jacket that doesn't fit well. JR is definitely quality. Strong yet very breathable mesh, great armor, practical adjustability and many attentions to detail (ie: the shell's zipper has an inner flap to keep wind out AND the liner's zipper is off-set so as to further prevent wind drafts when riding in colder weather, which I have yet to do but I suspect I could make this a 3-season jacket). I've ridden in temps from 70 to 105 (in Indiana, so it's a very humid heat). The Phoenix keeps me cool and dry up to ~100, then it's just hot no matter what. Though I was warm I wasn't sweating bullets because the airflow kept me dry. ATGATT=All The Gear All The Time. Be safe. Buy a jacket. $150 is cheap health insurance.

Color Name: Hi-Vis Neon/BlackSize Name: Large
Pros:Comfortable and it seems to breath well so far in this Arizona weather. Has elbow, back, and shoulder pads, not sure if they're CE approved. Two side pockets, and one interior sunglass pocket lined with what feels like microfiber so it's nice for my cellphone. Has a little latch for keys on the inside of the jacket as well so you won't misplace them. Comes with a removable wind liner and also has a zipper attachment on the inside back part of the jacket to attach to riding pants. Has velcro strap adjustment of the wrists and waist.

Cons: Came with the tiniest bit of fraying at the cuffs and shoulder logos. The back plate seems a little soft and bendy, not sure how it will absorb impact. Biggest issue is the slack at the arms. I am 5'9" and 170, and my arms aren't pencil like by any means. However, even when I am wearing a medium (which conforms to my torso well), the elbow pads move about quite easily, almost to the point where I can turn the pad completely to the other side of my arm. This is on the tightest adjustment setting. This would be easily fixed with another set of velcro straps but instead they chose button adjustment instead. I could have went down to a small but then it would have been too short. Also, the washing instructions do not permit machine washing or dry cleaning or anything at all except for gentle hand washing.

So it is a good summer jacket overall, but if you don't have exceptionally large forearms and biceps, I would suggest something with a tighter fit around the arms.

This is my second Joe Rocket jacket and the fit and finish of it are first-rate. I tried on bunch of mesh jackets from different manufacturers and none of them matched the quality & feel of the JR, in fact w most other jackets, the addition of mesh made them feel flimsy and insubstantial. On the JR, the mesh is well-integrated w the design of the jacket so it still fits the way it should without feeling cheap or flimsy.

But the real test of the quality of this jacket is how it performs in the SE Texas summer heat. So while my friends donned their tee -shirts (tempting fate of course--one fall and they're a bloody mess) to stay cooler, I put on my Joe Rocket mesh jacket which is designed with the proper padding in all the right places to protect me in any fall. Granted, when it's 95 humid degrees the JR jacket feels a lot more comfortable at 70 mph than sitting at a stop light, but even then it's not too bad. Air flow is great in the jacket and I wear an Under Armor heat gear compression shirt under it that wicks perspiration to the surface proving plenty of sweat cooling effect.

My one and only beef with this jacket is the collar or,should I say, the lack thereof. Joe Rocket should have invested another inch or two of fabric and put in a Nehru style collar. As it is the lack of collar means a gap between jacket and bottom of full-face helmet and the weirdest red-neck sun burn design ever. I'm covered head-to-boots everywhere else, but the collarless design of the jacket means I have to put sunscreen on just my neck before I ride. Oh well, it's a PITA, but considering all the great features of the Joe Rocket Jacket, it's not a deal-killer, yet is the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. If you love to ride in the heat, but want to be safe the Joe Rocket is definitely the way to go!
