Will Be Good for Trivia Contests!, November 28, 2011
This review is from: Joel Whitburn's Music Stars: Brief Bios of Every Recording Artist Who Ever Charted (Paperback)
JOEL WHITBURN'S MUSIC STARS, BRIEF BIOS OF EVERY RECORDING ARTIST WHO EVER CHARTED will probably be most welcomed by trivia buffs. It features over 8,000 thumbnail biographies of artists who have enjoyed BILLBOARD chart success in the pop, rock, R&B, hip-hop, country, adult contemporary and novelty fields.
Though the back cover states that entries include "real names, significant dates, band members, hometown and more," that's not quite true. Some entries are bare-bone; others run to a paragraph. Most average out to two lines.
Whitburn does deserve credit for the wide net he casts. Many of the artists/groups listed in MUSIC STARS barely made a blip on the Billboard charts or were truly oddball entries in the recording world. Case in point: Senator Everett Dirksen; p. 72!
Generally MUSIC STARS is a pretty dry read. However, it is a useful reference guide to the record industry. Your call, folks.
