From Publishers Weekly

Adult or child, no one is immune to the frolics created by Kent, the versatile humorist whose beloved characters include Joey. This is a sequel to the upstart kangaroo's debut, starting when he refuses to clean up the mess in his room (Mama's pouch). With his bindlestiff on his shoulder, Joey runs away, looking for a new home, but they're all taken. Meantime, Mama's pouch is for rent but not suitable for any of the animals who investigate the space. After a while, the wanderer hitches a ride in a postman's bag and fetches up back home, so Mama discards the junk mail and welcomes her Joey, thus ending the non-stop surprises illustrated with verve in Kent's boldly colored pictures. From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 A silly story sure to strike the funny bones of independent readers and story hour groups. Joey, a baby kangaroo, runs away from home rather than clean his messy room. Soon other animals (a bear, an elephant, a bull, a giraffe and rabbits) try his upset mother's empty pocket, but they find that it isn't just right. Meanwhile, Joey is doing the same thing looking for a home, even trying a pelican's beak before settling in a mail pouch. The next morning the postman delivers Joey to his mother along with her bills. Joey is now sure that there is no place like home, even if you do have to clean your room. Children will enjoy Kent's typical brightly colored humorous cartoon illustrations as much as they will enjoy Joey's adventures on his own. Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, N.Y.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joey Runs Away Is Run-Away Success In Our Home --4.5 Stars, April 14, 2005
This review is from: Joey Runs away (Hardcover)
A Scholastic Video, "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom", introduced us to Joey and his mom and we liked the story so much that we decided that we must have the book.

We searched for it on Amazon but have found that it is not currently in print. Bummer. This is such a delightful book that it is ashame that it is not more readily available. With its simple drawings and funny story it has something for most kids. [Mine who are 3 and 5, boy and girl, ask for this to be read all the time.]

The story:
Joey is a young kangaroo who runs away from home in order to avoid cleaning up his room. While he is gone, the other animals find out about mama's empty pouch and they approach her with the idea of renting it out. Of course, Joey's mom refuses. Joey searches but cannot find good lodgings. Joey and mom are reunited when Joey finally realizes that there is no place like home and hearth, and besides his room wasn't *that* messy.
