This review is from: Johann Christian Bach: 12 Clavier Concertos Op. 1 & Op. 7 (Audio CD)
This album provides a wonderful exposure to the piano concerto in the generation before Mozart. The performances are excellent as is the sound, but be prepared for the sound of the piano-forte. It's not a modern grand. It's sound is often harsh, especially against the silvery texture of the strings, and not terribly resonant, but this is no doubt the way J C Bach heard it. The music is a delight to the ears, inventive and fresh. Some of it could easily be mistaken for early Mozart, but then Mozart studied with J C Bach during his trip to London as a young man. The style can generally be described as Mozartian without the usual "lilt," but not quite as "masculine" as Haydn's concertos. One can very definitely hear where Mozart may have picked up some of idioms so characteristic of his piano concerto writing. Certainly a worthy addition to your classical library if you can find it.
