5.0 out of 5 stars Very good CD of Johann Strauss I in this series July 14, 2014
By G.C.
Format:Audio CD
Volume 6 of the Marco Polo series of the complete works of Johann Strauss I doesn't seem to have a single overarching theme to the selections, although a few micro-themes can be gleaned. One is that the principal opus-numbered works are the cluster from op. 56 to op. 60, though not in direct succession on the track roster. Another theme is that several works take inspiration from then-contemporary operas or operettas, specifically a march and a waltz based on themes from Ferdinand Herold's opera 'Zampa', the 'Fra Diavolo Cotillions', op. 41, and a quadrille after motifs from Donizetti's opera 'Anna Bolena'.

The op. 41 'Fra Diavolo Cotillions' and the Zampa march are the first two works on the album, and come off as relatively simple (for lack of a better term) in their treatment of the source melodic material. However, the 3rd work, the 'Alexandra Waltzes', op. 56, find the composer operating at a higher level of sophistication of his handling of his melodies, starting with the rather majestic introduction before the string of waltzes commences. In fact, this same sophistication informs the op. 58 waltz 'Mein schonster Tag in Baden' (My Fairest Day in Baden) and the op. 59 waltz 'The Four Temperaments'.

The Slovak Sinfonietta Zilina and conductor Christian Pollack do a very fine job all throughout the selections, in keeping with their other albums in this series. It is worth noting that the notes by Franz Mailer do cite an earlier authority on Johann Strauss I, Max Schonherr, quite a bit.

My own inclination of the ratings of most of the works is in the 4 to 4.5 star range. However, because of the relatively higher level of the works on the three particular waltzes noted earlier, and given the level of the musicianship, I'll round up to 5 stars. If you are collecting this series, you need not hesitate on this installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is a favorite in my car July 7, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I purchased this CD ESPECIALLY for the first track on it, which I initially heard on a local classical music station. I have found that all of the tracks are equally as enjoyable. This CD is a favorite in my car.
