Book Description

September 4, 2006
John the Baptist In-depth: A Closer Look is for the reader who desires a greater understanding of God the Father and Jesus Christ, His Son, by examining the prophet's role in history-John's unusual birth circumstances, his obedience to God the Father's call as forerunner for Messiah, his life, his ministry and his death. Past prophets foretold the coming of Messiah, but John the Baptist's entire reason for living was to announce His arrival (he was the only prophet to see it happen in his lifetime). As John's main goal was to point Israel to Messiah, the aim of this book is to direct readers to Christ. With thorough use of Old and New Testament passages, it examines the remarkable circumstances surrounding John's birth and helps the reader visualize John's childhood growing up in the comfortable home of a priest with bloodlines to Aaron, Moses' brother. It considers John's wilderness living over the privileges of a priestly home; it follows his short span of ministry and then takes us into prison at the time of John's humiliating death-all engineered by God with a divine purpose in mind. God called Everett Aaron Edwards in the middle of the night from a life of sin. Edwards had no prior understanding of why God would come into his life, yet he was quickly and powerfully changed. This experience led him to study the prophets and other men of the Bible who had similar dramatic callings. Because Jesus said that there was no greater prophet than John the Baptist, Edwards feels John's story needs to be understood better by the Church: "We need to learn from John the Baptist to serve God as he did."

This review is from: John The Baptist In-Depth, a closer look (Paperback)
I am leaving a review to help others not waste money buying this book. I am in my mid-50's and have been in ministry most of my adult life. I am currently in seminary where I have about a 98+% average.

First the positive: It has a nice cover. That's it.

You could say the book is 88 pages but, if it were not double spaced (or 1.5 spaced) it might be 45-55 pages. Additionally, if you took out all the passages of scripture that are quoted you might be down to 35 pages. There are biblical passages strung together that run for pages. This is very poor writing and a cut and paste job to fill space. If I had an undergraduate student (let alone a seminarian) hand in a paper like this book he would get a very poor grade. At best this could be a 20 or 30 page booklet that is superficial and poorly written.

As to the content. In the first chapter we begin to find wrong references listed (makes a point and gives a passage but the passage does not make that point). He states Matthew but it should be Luke. The author quotes Daniel 9:24 and begins to make bold statements. They are wrong because he says "holy" refers to only one of two PEOPLE (Jesus or God the father). The NIV, ESV, NASB, NRSV,... all translate the passage "most holy place." NOT person. This is all in the first few pages. I could go on but the book is not worth the effort.

The authors comments and insights (if you call them that) are shallow at best and wrong or misleading at worse. There are many good books on John the Baptist out there. Many on Amazon. This is not one of them.
